Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas Are New Leads for ‘True Detective’ Season 5

A fifth season of the HBO series True Detective is on the way. And after speculation for some time, HBO has officially confirmed its two new leads. Both Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas will be joining the production when it begins filming in 2027.

On the official True Detective account on X, a short teaser video for the new season was posted making the announcement. While neither actor appears in the video, their names are boldly displayed. The show’s fifth season was picked up shortly after completion of season 4 back in 2024.

Rumors about Antonio Banderas being part of the HBO show began last year. But were not confirmed until the recent announcement. He has been busy recently, appearing in feature films like the recently released Anthony Bourdain biopic, Tony.

Nicolas Cage teased becoming part of True Detective during his appearance at New York Comic Con. While speaking on a panel that covered multiple topics, including what happened with Amazon while filming Spider-Noir, he mentioned the HBO series briefly.

“Feed the family, and don’t do too many movies back to back to back. So I think I’m probably going to do another season of television. I think I might do a season of True Detective. That’s OK that I’m the first to announce that, right?”

Few details about the upcoming season have been revealed. Nicolas will play a character named Henry Logan, while Antonio plays Rai Garcia. The story will take place in Jamaica Bay, New York, which is a very different setting from the previous seasons of the show. How all of it ties together is still unknown.

No official release date for season 5 of True Detective was given. Production on the new season begins in 2027, so it will be some time before audiences get to see Nicolas Cage and Antonio Banderas together on the show.
