2017 Fast & Furious Blockbuster, the Franchise’s First $1.2 Billion Hit, Is Now One of Netflix’s Most-Watched Movies 9 Years Later

Nine years after its cinema run, The Fate of the Furious is speeding back into viewers’ watchlists. Now, the 2017 film ranks fourth among Netflix’s most popular movies in the United States, according to FlixPatrol.

This eighth Fast & Furious entry joined Netflix’s library on October 16. By October 18 and claimed a top-five spot alongside newer releases.

What sends Vin Diesel’s Dom against his own crew?

This time, Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto faces a threat that turns his bond into a weakness. After cyberterrorist Cipher enters his life, Dom turns against Letty and the people he calls family.

However, his crew refuses to give up on him. Alongside stars Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham, Charlize Theron joins the series as Cipher, while Kurt Russell returns.

Beyond its cast, the movie pushes the series from its street-racing roots. Instead, director F. Gary Gray builds the action around hacked cars, global danger, and a submarine chase.

Was The Fate of the Furious the franchise’s first billion-dollar hit?

Despite its earnings, this was not the first Fast & Furious movie to cross $1.2 billion. Earlier, 2015’s Furious 7 earned more than $1.5 billion worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

Nevertheless, The Fate of the Furious brought in about $1.236 billion worldwide. That made it another theatrical success before its streaming run.

Behind the camera, Gray already knew several stars from earlier projects, including The Italian Job and A Man Apart. Consequently, joining the series felt familiar rather than like starting from scratch.

“Yes, it was like a family reunion,” Gray told Blackfilm in 2017. “We had worked with each other and I know what they are capable of and we have grown over the years.”

Today’s chart position measures popularity, not a published total of viewing hours. Still, the ranking shows this sequel has found an audience again.
