The Tennessee Titans Get Their First Win of the Season

The Tennessee Titans entered this week’s game as one of the three remaining winless teams, and halfway through their contest with the Indianapolis Colts, that didn’t seem likely to change. The Colts led 13-0 at halftime and looked on track for their third win of the season.

The Titans dominated the second half. The shift came by way of turnovers and special teams plays. Colts quarterback Daniel Jones threw two interceptions, one to Amani Hooker and the other to Cor’Dale Flott. Titans kicker Joey Slye hit two field goals to cut the score to 13-6.

Cam Ward connected with Carnell Tate for the rookie wide receiver’s first career touchdown, tying it 13-13. The Titans then blocked a punt and scored to take a 20-13 lead. The Colts would answer with a Jonathan Taylor rushing touchdown. Slye added two more field goals to make it 26-20, and the Colts couldn’t connect on a hail mary.

This was the first win for new Titans head coach Robert Saleh. His career record now sits at 21-41. This win was much needed for the Titans and quarterback Cam Ward. The former first-overall pick has drawn heavy criticism for his mediocre play so far this season and has had a less-than-ideal relationship with the media.

Things really came to a head following the Titans’ loss to the Baltimore Ravens two weeks ago. Ward seemed frustrated that the media weren’t there when he got to the post-game podium. His comment had gone semi-viral within the sports media ecosystem.

“Well, ain’t nobody here. We can just go… They’ve got three minutes, bro. I’ll walk out,” Ward said.

Hopefully, with the win, the post-game press conference can be more cordial.  Ward went 11 of 22 for 102 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception. Running back Tony Pollard rushed for 76 yards on 19 carries. Tate led the way at receiver with 6 receptions for 70 yards and that aforementioned touchdown.

The only downside to this victory is that the Titans hurt their draft position. With the Dolphins off with a bye week, and thus unable to win, the Titans will be behind them at the very least. If the Chargers can’t find a way to win against the Chiefs, they will be ahead of the Titans as well.
