Zelda: Ocarina Of Time Dungeon Crawl # 4 – Still An All-Timer

I left last week’s Ocarina of Time attribute sensation like I could have been a little also negative concerning the whole point. 3 weeks into my playthrough, and I had simply poo-pooed back-to-back problem boxes. Well, are afraid not, since I’m swinging in the complete opposite instructions this time.

This is component 4 of my Dungeon Crawl collection, where I take another look at one OoT dungeon each week in the run-up to the Change 2 remake Equally as with the previous 3 versions, I ‘m entering into dungeon specifics below, so if you’ve never played OoT before and you are conserving on your own for the remake, just know that there are spoilers in advance!

OoT Dungeon Crawl # 4 – The Woodland Temple

With Web link all grown up, it was time to head back to Kokiri Town and see what had actually been going down in the home community throughout the 7 years he was away. Being my umpteenth playthrough, I recognized what was waiting at the end of that log labyrinth, obviously, but I was looking forward to it, nevertheless, because the Woodland Temple might just be my favourite Zelda dungeon ever.

A vibrant claim, I recognize, however need I remind you that this is the holy place with the twisting hallways? The Wallmasters? One of the most haunting boss fights in pc gaming? Yeah, it rules.

I constantly fail to remember that the Woodland Holy place begins with its outside entry. Those pesky Wolfos really felt much easier on this playthrough than previously, but maybe playing this along with Elden Ring is to blame for that (pfft, could you make your assault telegraming any more noticeable?). As happens each time I play via the dungeon, I neglected everything about the key in the tree before you enter the holy place proper, and invested a great half an hour straying around like a wally, persuaded there was some sort of dungeon ‘tough lock’ if you use the tricks inaccurately prior to I remembered. Sigh

Outside of that minor hiccup, I had an usually exceptional time with this one. It’s a culmination of everything that I suched as (or desired) from the previous dungeons. It has the main hub space of Dodongo’s Cavern , the puzzle-solving of The Great Deku Tree , and a large central challenge (lighting the four lanterns) that holds the whole thing with each other– something I craved in Jabu-Jabu

It feels like the most open dungeon of them all at an initial glance, with the central chamber opening up in 5 different instructions, though it’s actually surprisingly linear– the majority of these doors are either secured or otherwise blocked off until you’ve extensively discovered the other hallways initially.

A lot of spaces are home to an unattainable entry on very first check out, as a matter of fact, though each of them are easily seen from the more obvious route. I’m considering the high-up doorway in one of the outside rooms that Navi so cockily insults you with as a potential Scarecrow spot, the heart-covered column sidewalk of the various other, and even the veranda door in the opening room– the only one of the five that you’re not entering from the lift-side.

Much like the knotting sidewalks that I commended in Dodongo’s Cave, the manner in which all of these secret doors are just unreachable makes ultimately walking through them feel all the more satisfying. My shed key shenanigans suggested it took ages before I can encounter that darn Deku Baba on a garden area’s high-up sidewalk, however man, did it feel terrific when I ultimately sufficed down.

Reaching all of these locations isn’t simply a straightforward case of exploration, either. The Woodland Holy place is a dungeon that actually makes you assume. Greater than any other I have actually taken another look at approximately this point, this is a problem box that forces you to comprehend how it functions prior to you can check out any better. Be that in the legendary twisting passages (which I enjoy just how you have to twist and afterwards untwist to advance) or in the knotting sidewalks, success in the Woodland Temple is all about understanding exactly how its rooms attach and locating a path through. The sensation of lastly getting the Bow so you can go back and hit all the eye changes continues to be unrivaled.

I’ll provide a fast shoutout to the liminal vibes of the entire location, also. If the Creepypasta phenomenon had been as packed with movie-spawning capacity in the late’ 90 s as it is today, there’s no doubt in my mind that some indie filmmaker would have transformed the Woodland Temple’s lengthy, empty passages, dropping checkered ceilings and Wallmasters into a full-blown horror. The looping songs is still enough to obtain under my skin; I do not need to see it realised in any other way, thanks.

Having addressed the 4 torch challenges and taken the lift to the cellar, it was time to once more face some youth trauma: Phantom Ganon.

The very first time I tried this employer on the N 64, I cried. Seeing the Satanic Force King peel his face at the beginning of the battle was enough to bring me to the side, then the occurring back-to-back battle phases (both toughest that the game has thrown at you until now) sufficed to tip me over.

Even playing it now, it still sends a shudder down my back. If the feeling of anticipation in enjoying the running paintings, coupled with the primary camera controls, wasn’t stressful sufficient, it’s followed by the ever-increasing back-and-forth of the power bolt ‘tennis suit’, which always lasts one hit longer than I’m expecting.

Don’t even obtain me begun on the brief Ganondorf speech that teases Web link at the end prior to his phantom kind is entraped in one more measurement. Damn, I was far as well young the very first time I played this.

Remake Reflections

It’s an outright astonishment, yet I’m not fairly willing to put a” 10/ 10, no notes” on it right now. Some shortcuts to the later winding pathways would certainly be a welcome adjustment in the remake, as would a somewhat more detailed map to make parsing the entryways and departures a little less complicated.

Otherwise, slap those wonderful new cam controls on the one in charge fight, and we’re onto one more victor.

Things are hotting up next week, as I take another flounder Death Hill. I’ll see you all then– remember to load a modification of Chiton!
