PSG-Lyon Match Postponed Amid Protests: Will NFL Move Forward With Saints-Steelers?

On Friday morning, Paris Saint-Germain announced the postponement of its Ligue 1 fixture against rivals Lyon on Sunday in response to the riots that have been taking place in the French capital.

The match was scheduled to kick-off at 7.45 p.m. local time on Sunday at Parc des Princes — located in southwest Paris, a region which has been heavily impacted by the protests.

“The Professional Football League has taken note of the order from the Paris Police Prefecture prohibiting the organization of the Paris Saint-Germain – Olympique Lyonnais match,” a translated statement from the team said on social media. “Accordingly, we inform you that the match between the two clubs, originally scheduled for this Sunday, October 25, has been postponed to Monday, October 26, at 8:30 p.m. at the Parc des Princes.”

The announcement comes just 48 before the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to kick off from Stade de France.

NFL Moving Forward With Saints-Steelers

While PSG opted to move its contest, the NFL has made it abundantly clear the league plans to move forward with Sunday’s Week 7 tilt between the Saints and Steelers.

“Preparations continue as scheduled for NFL events and the game at Stade de France next Sunday,” the NFL said earlier this week. “We continue to work closely with local authorities and partners on all operational and security matters. We are also providing the two clubs with regular updates. There’s been no disruption or impact at league sites.”

Earlier this week, Dani Watt, the wife of Steelers star pass rusher TJ Watt, expressed concerns over the league’s decision to play the game amid protests in the region.

The retired NWSL player reposted a news headline from CBS Pittsburgh to her Instagram Story on Monday, which read, “The NFL says it is continuing forward with plans for the upcoming Steelers-Saints game amid unrest in Paris.”

She added, “Tell me how this makes sense???”

While Watt’s wife is concerned, Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers believes in the league’s safety measures.

“I definitely think that the NFL is alert to what’s going on. This game means a lot to the NFL. If it was unsafe, then I’m sure we wouldn’t be here,” he told reporters on Friday.

Kickoff is set for 9:30 a.m. ET.
