David Byrne Avoids the Trap of Addiction That Destroyed So Many of His Fellow Musicians

David Byrne is opening up about how he avoided the addiction problems associated with rock stars and musicians.

The Talking Heads singer recently told i-D magazine that he knows it is “super common” for musicians to waste their talents on alcohol and drugs. That is why he’s taken great care to avoid the same fate.

“We’ve seen a lot of people go from being very vibrant and creative to just being a mess. Early on with Talking Heads, I was reading these rock biographies on people like Alice Cooper, and they all had this similar arc: super successful, ego out of control, start to drink and do drugs, go into rehab, then attempt to come back,” he explained.

“It’s a cycle. And I thought, ‘You don’t want to fall into that,’” he added. While he is not “100% clean,” he has taken drugs but realized that extreme usage is not sustainable for famous musicians.

“I still have maybe one more glass of wine that I think is sensible. But you’d see people around you who were just destroying their lives,” he explained. “People who’d go through a whole Jack Daniels or bottle of vodka — or two whole bottles of wine every night. And I just went, ‘I think I’m done.’”

Last year, he told Hot Press that the goal is to achieve the “perfect” level of drunkness, something he believes he has achieved.

“It’s what everybody is looking for, I guess,” he admitted in 2025, believing it’s “when you’ve just had enough to release inhibitions and feel happy but not enough to be falling down.”

Byrne claims that when is intoxicating, he doesn’t get aggressive, just “sleepy.” “If I have too many, I get sleepy and sometimes actually fall asleep, which is kind of embarrassing if you’re in a bar with friends, especially when it’s your turn to pay the tab,” he claimed.

The Talking Heads 1983 rider, per Far Out Magazine, included cold bottles of Heineken or Tsing Tao beers, a bottle of vodka on ice, and then a bottle of red and white wine.
