Donnie Wahlberg Reveals Legacy Blue Bloods Character’s Potential Spinoff Return Comes With A Catch

Boston Blue could potentially bring back one major Blue Bloods character, but there is one condition.

Blue Bloods concluded in December 2024 after 14 seasons on CBS, bringing an end to the Reagan family’s story. However, the franchise returned with Boston Blue, which follows Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan as he starts over after joining the Boston Police Department. The spinoff, which also stars Sonequa Martin-Green as his partner Detective Lena Silver, is currently airing its second season.

Boston Blue has continued expanding the Blue Bloods universe while also bringing back several familiar faces from the flagship show. However, one of the original series’ biggest stars has yet to make a comeback. Tom Selleck, who portrayed NYPD Commissioner Frank Reagan throughout Blue Blood’s 14-season run, still hasn’t made an appearance in the spinoff. Now, Wahlberg has explained exactly what would need to happen for his former co-star to return as Frank.

During an interview with People, Wahlberg revealed that a potential reunion with Selleck would depend heavily on the quality of the storyline. The actor explained that he and Boston Blue’s co-creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis would need to develop something worthy of Frank’s legacy. According to Wahlberg, Selleck’s dedication to the character and the original show means that he would only appear if the plot justifies it instead of just making a cameo for the sake of nostalgia and fan service.

Despite there not being a storyline that has met Selleck’s expectations yet, Wahlberg is still optimistic that his Blue Bloods co-star would eventually appear in the series. The actor has faith in Boston Blue’s creative team and believes that they will be able to come up with something that would pique Selleck’s interest.

I love him and respect him so much. I know what it will require. It’s going to require the most thoughtful, elegant episode that the Brandons [co-creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis] and I can pull together. And he will do it, but it has to be something really special, because he takes what he does very seriously. And he takes the legacy of the show seriously. He takes Frank Reagan seriously.

Selleck’s future within the Blue Bloods franchise has been heavily speculated since Boston Blue was announced. The actor had expressed disappointment about CBS’ decision to end the police procedural drama, making it clear that he believed the series still had many stories to tell. So, viewers have been eager to see if the veteran will finally reprise his role.

During the discussion, Wahlberg also expressed the love he has for Selleck and how much he missed working with him. The actor added that he learned so much from Selleck during their time on the set of Blue Bloods. He explained, “I learned so much from him, and I have the utmost respect for him. I love him and I miss him. I want him to be on the show at some point.

Boston Blue releases new episodes on Fridays at 10:00 PM ET and 7:00 PM PT on CBS.
