The ‘Elden Ring’ Movie Is A24’s Most Expensive Film With $200 Million Budget

A24 Films has been in production on a film based on the FromSoftware video game, Elden Ring. Filming for the movie finished in July 2026, but work on it is far from done for the studio. But the price tag for making an Elden Ring movie has reached incredible heights that nobody may have expected.

According to a new report shared by the Wall Street Journal, the budget for the Elden Ring movie is staggeringly high. While the numbers aren’t final, sources to the outlet say the budget of the film is around $200 million. This would already make it the most expensive film that A24 has ever produced.

For comparison, various outlets have reported the budgets for previous A24 movies that were successful releases. In 2025, A24 released Marty Supreme in theaters, which cost around $70 million to make. It was the priciest movie for the studio at that time, but the budget for the Elden Ring movie overshadows that by nearly 3x its cost.

This puts Elden Ring in a completely different category of films. It makes it more comparable to big-budget blockbuster releases in theaters, instead of the usual lower budget movies that A24 Films has been known for.

Originally announced to be in production in May 2025, Elden Ring is based on the hit role-playing game developed by FromSoftware. Many aspects of its world and overall backstory were written by famed writer George R.R. Martin, laying a foundation for developers to build around. The movie is being directed by Alex Garland, and produced by A24 Films with Bandai Namco Filmworks.

While plot details are not yet known about Elden Ring, it already has a solid cast involved with it. Emma Laird, Tom Burke, Jonathan Pryce, Kit Connor, Cailee Spaeny, and Nick Offerman are among the names attached to the project. As of now, Elden Ring is planned to release in theaters in May 2028.
