Michael Keaton’s Star-Studded 2027 Western ‘Rode to Ruin’ Adds Three New Cast Members

The iconic actor Michael Keaton is set to star in and direct a Western slated for release in 2027. Two other major stars were already announced to be co-starring with the beloved actor in the upcoming project. Now, another three well-known and extremely respected names have been added to Rode to Ruin’s cast.

A Powerhouse Lead Cast: Michael Keaton, Morgan Freeman, and Laura Linney

On September 1, 2026, Deadline reported that Michael Keaton and Morgan Freeman are set to co-star in an upcoming Western slated to be released in 2027. Additionally, the outlet noted that Keaton will be directing the film, which is titled Rode to Ruin. One of the film’s producers, Lori McCreary, told the outlet what the film will focus on. “Rode to Ruin is a deeply human story about forgiveness, revenge, redemption, and the choices people make when time is running out.”

Rode to Ruin will mark the first time that Keaton and Freeman will share the screen since they co-starred in 1988’s Clean and Sober. In the film, Keaton will portray the retired Marshal Henry Tillman, and Freeman is cast as wanted outlaw Joseph Mulberry. While talking to Deadline about the project, Keaton explained why he felt the film would be a great project he could work on with Freeman.

“When I first read it, I thought, this is really good — and there’s more here for Morgan and me to mine together. Once we talked, it became clear we were on the same page. Just as The Shawshank Redemption isn’t simply a prison movie, Rode to Ruin isn’t simply a Western. It’s a story with a lot of layers that happens to unfold in the West.”

Days later, on September 10, Deadline gave a major update on Rode to Ruin’s cast when it reported that Laura Linney was set to star in the anticipated Western. In the film, she will portray Hedda Tessman, a character described as a gritty trader who works the frontier territory alone and maintains a close connection to Keaton’s character. Linney spoke to Deadline about joining the cast of Rode to Ruin:

“The script has the scope and texture of a Western, but its real power comes from the people at its center. I’m very pleased to be joining Michael, Morgan and this wonderful group of filmmakers.”
