‘Final Fantasy Resonance’ Breaks New Record As Player Count Continues to Climb

Final Fantasy Resonance was released late last week, and fans have been rushing to buy the HD-2D turn-based title in high numbers. Resonance is the first turn-based Final Fantasy game in almost 25 years, and in that time, it seems absence has made fans’ hearts grow much fonder.

According to SteamDB, Resonance has achieved a concurrent player count of almost 43,000 players, which is the now the record for amount of players of a Final Fantasy game on Steam (not including Final Fantasy 14). The previous record was held by the PC port of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which peaked at around 40,564 players.

At the time of writing, there are currently almost 40,000 players playing the Steam version of the game. It has been roughly estimated that around 250,000 copies of the game have been sold on just the PC version alone. These numbers do not factor in any other platform sales.

Being an HD-2D game and reusing some assets from the mobile game, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, it is possible that, when all is said and done, Final Fantasy Resonance could end up being one of Square Enix’s biggest financial successes of the modern era.

Critically, Final Fantasy Resonance has also been a huge success, with an 86 Metascore on Metacritic. In Men’s Journal‘s review of the game, I called it the best game of 2026 and praised the game’s combat, story, characters, visuals, RPG customization, and return to the series’ roots.

With Resonance‘s apparent success, it seems likely that Square Enix will continue to develop more games in the HD-2D style. While Brave Exvius is now offline, there is quite a lot of content left that can be used for at least two more games. Time will tell, but all in all, it seems Final Fantasy Resonance is a homerun.

Final Fantasy Resonance is available now for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2.
