Weekend Box Office: Clayface has a strong opening, but You Can See Everything is a smash hit

The box office results are in, and in a piece of good news for DC Studios, who are still reeling from Supergirl flopping this summer, their latest film, Clayface, opened with a solid $24 million, which is more than I predicted earlier this week. Now, whether or not this makes it a hit is a question, with many pointing to the fact that a similar supervillain origin tale, Morbius, was able to open with $15 million more. But the budget for Clayface is a thrifty $44 million, and it doesn’t boast any big names in the cast, with it led by newcomer Tom Rhys Harries. It also earned a solid A-minus CinemaScore, which is good for an R-rated horror flick. Internationally, it made another $19 million for a $43 million worldwide total. Not a bad start.

Nathan Fielder’s You Can See Everything continues its impressive box office run

But the big news is Nathan Fielder’s You Can See Everything, the Elizabeth Holmes doc that has really captured the zeitgeist. It opened wide this weekend after only playing on 800 screens last week, making $19.5 million, which is a 25% increase from last week, for a $45.15 million domestic total. It will be interesting to see how it does next week, with it possible that the A24 release could become one of their highest-grossing films.

Wildwood opens decently, but Street Fighter suffers a disastrous second-weekend drop

Laika’s megabudget Wildwood, which our critic called a masterpiece, opened decently with $11.5 million, although that’s against a $100 million budget. Word of mouth will be pivotal, although the CinemaScore is a strong A.

Last weekend’s champ, Street Fighter, completely collapsed this weekend, only earning $8.6 million, which is a disastrous 72% plunge. With a $46 million domestic haul, its chances of a sequel are DOA. No news yet on its international haul.

IKEA, Wicker

Wicker and Other Mommy continue their theatrical runs

Right behind it was Black Bear’s Wicker, an offbeat period romance starring Alexander Skarsgård and Olivia Colman. It did nice business for a small-scale release, making $5.75 million. Right behind it was a BTS concert film with $4.5 million.

Blumhouse’s Other Mommy started to wrap up its run with $3.85 million and a $51.5 million domestic total. Its global total is closing in on $100 million.

Sense and Sensibility and Whalefall struggle as Verity holds on

Focus Features’ Jane Austen adaptation, Sense and Sensibility, made $3.4 million, a 53% decrease from last week, with its domestic total a mediocre $13.6 million. It’s earned about the same overseas, with the worldwide total just shy of $30 million.

Disney’s Whalefall continued its troubled run, with the Austin Abrams-led movie only making $3.2 million, which is a 59% decrease from last week. Domestically, it’s at just over $14 million, while its worldwide total is $31.3 million. I expect this to drop on Hulu pretty quickly, where it may find a bigger audience.

The top 10 was rounded out by Verity, with $3.06 million for a $71.5 million domestic total and $162 million worldwide.

Klara and the Sun and A Talent for Murder flop at the box office

Other would-be semi-wide openers, A Talent for Murder and Klara and the Sun, died. A Talent for Murder made $718K, while Klara and the Sun, despite Jenna Ortega in the lead and Taika Waititi directing, made an abysmal $725K, making the Sony release one of the year’s biggest flops.
