Chris Pratt Lost 60 Pounds in 6 Months for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ After Giving Up Beer

Everyone remembers where they were when Chris Pratt, who was starring as the lovable Andy Dwyer in Parks and Recreation, emerged from the darkened corridors of the fitness realm with a six pack. The actor lost weight to headline Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and has maintained a ripped physique in the years since the film’s release. He currently has top billing in the Prime Video thriller The Terminal List as a former Navy SEAL, which released its second season this past week.

Replace That Six Pack With a Different Kind of Six Pack

The main element of Pratt’s weight loss back then? Cutting out beer. He shed a remarkable 60 pounds in six months for the MCU flick after giving up the brew. Pratt posted a shirtless selfie on Instagram in July 2013, writing, “Six months no beer. #GOTG Kinda douchey to post this but my brother made me.”

Funnily enough, Parks and Recreation wrote Pratt’s weight loss into its Season 6 premiere, in which Andy remarks that he dropped 50 pounds in one month because he stopped drinking beer.

In an interview with Jay Leno, Pratt called beer a “social lubricant.” He observed that after cutting out the alcoholic beverage, he “got grumpy” from “time to time.” He also revealed that he “didn’t drink for seven or eight months, which was really not that difficult for me.”

Chris Pratt Did More Than Just Quit Beer

So, was it just beer? Pratt also ate clean and worked out, of course, explaining that he did “three or four hours a day of just consistent, ass-kicking hard work.” He incorporated kickboxing, running, swimming, and boxing into his routine. He also drank significantly more water, “peeing all day long, every day,” and increased his daily caloric intake to 4,000 calories.

Pratt observed that, while abstaining from alcohol certainly contributed to the pound-shedding, it was eating the right food that made more of an impact. “I actually lost weight by eating more food, but eating the right food, eating healthy foods, and so when I was done with the movie my body hadn’t been in starvation mode,” he said at the time.

Before his rapid weight loss for Guardians, the actor actually gained 60 pounds for 2013’s Delivery Man, a comedy-drama in which he starred opposite Vince Vaughn.

Pratt reportedly doesn’t drink often, “but still springs for a low-calorie beer once in a while.” He also reportedly supports his ex-wife Anna Faris‘s sobriety journey.
