A University of Michigan study published on Oct. 23 found that Americans’ long-run inflation expectations remain above comparable readings from 2019 and 2024. The persistence of these expectations could complicate the path toward easier financing conditions for Bitcoin, even as the headline consumer sentiment index shows minimal movement.

The core concern identified in the analysis is that repeated price shocks may leave consumers expecting inflation to persist. If these expectations alter spending behavior, reducing inflation could become more difficult, thereby narrowing the room for US monetary policy to ease.

October Survey Data

Michigan’s final October survey placed the consumer sentiment index at 48, compared to 48.1 in September. Year-ahead inflation expectations rose to 4.7% from 4.6% in the previous month. Long-run inflation expectations increased to 3.5%, up from 3.4% in September.

Both inflation readings matched the preliminary figures cited in advance coverage on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23. Each metric rose from September and remained steady between the preliminary and final releases.

The study utilized a consistent web-interview series to determine that median long-run expectations are above the monthly ranges observed in 2019 and 2024. Recent readings indicate elevated expectations among consumers anticipating the largest price increases, alongside greater overall uncertainty.

Expert Analysis and Policy Context

Survey director Joanne Hsu noted that while sample sizes differ across years, the findings also hold against historical official phone interviews. Hsu described the 2025 tariff escalation and the energy shock associated with the 2026 Iran conflict as successive influences on these expectations.

Hsu warned that consumers who expect further price increases may bring purchases forward. She stated that across households, this spending could reinforce inflation. Hsu also presented precautionary spending as a risk whose current contribution remains unmeasured, adding that entrenched expectations remain avoidable.

The potential connection to Bitcoin runs through monetary policy and investors’ willingness to take risk. The Federal Reserve’s policy framework states that anchored inflation expectations help inflation return to the 2% objective and support moderate long-term interest rates. Persistently elevated inflation could therefore constrain monetary easing.

At their Sept. 15–16 meeting, Fed participants judged medium- and longer-term inflation expectations consistent with the 2% objective, according to the meeting minutes. Some participants expressed concern that prolonged above-target inflation could affect expectations and wage- and price-setting. These judgments predate Michigan’s October study.

A 2023 International Monetary Fund working paper found that US monetary tightening depresses a shared component of crypto prices by reducing investors’ willingness to take risk. The paper noted that this effect resembles the impact on equities, supporting a possible route from stubborn inflation to weaker crypto demand.
