Brazil has spoken. Voters secured Leftist Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s fourth term in office, dampening a growing far-right movement in Latin America. Lula claimed a surprise win over Flávio Bolsonaro, son of a former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who was both an ally to President Donald Trump and who was sent to jail for an attempted coup.
Lula’s win was a surprise. He’s now the first candidate since 1989 to lose in the first round of voting, and win the presidency in the final round. His supporters celebrate the triumph handily, taking to the streets in celebration, according to The Guardian.
