With Bitcoin Under $80k, Two Whales Send BTC Worth $206M to Coinbase – Bitcoin News

Key Takeaways

Three Minutes on a Monday Was All It Took

The first wallet blinked yesterday and emptied 986.31 BTC into a single deposit address, while a second then followed up with a 1,584.98 BTC transfer, routed to the same destination.

Onchain sleuths flagged the pair roughly 10 hours later and tagged the receiving address as Coinbase Prime, the exchange’s institutional desk. The near-identical timing and shared destination suggest one entity controls both, though that is an inference.

A Three-Year Hold

The larger wallet received 1,584.89 BTC on Jan. 18, 2023, whereas the smaller one picked up 986.18 BTC on May 30, 2023. Apart from a handful of dust deposits, neither address moved a coin after that.

Bitcoin closed near $20,677 on the first date and $27,694 on the second, according to historical price data, putting their combined cost basis around $60 million.

At the $80,326 implied by Lookonchain’s $206.52 million valuation, the stack is worth about 3.4 times what it cost, i.e. a paper gain near $146 million. Not bad for doing nothing for three years.

Coinbase Prime is a custody and over-the-counter (OTC) trading venue for funds, family offices and treasury companies. Therefore, in this case, the holder could be moving into qualified custody, posting collateral or prepping a block trade that never touches the public order book.

What makes the timing interesting, however, is the company it keeps because hours later, Whale Alert tracked another 1,847 BTC, worth $148.3 million, moving from an unknown wallet to Coinbase Institutional. In a single afternoon, more than $350 million in bitcoin headed for the same institutional doorway.

Bitcoin’s Price Makes the Transfers Ring Louder

At press time, bitcoin’s price sits around $79,700, roughly 37% below its record of $126,080. Bitcoin.com News reported earlier this week that the asset is desperately clinging to $80K while nine moving averages are leaning bearish.

U.S. demand has been soft and the Coinbase Bitcoin Premium, which compares the price on Coinbase with offshore venues, has been negative for 53 consecutive days. In fact, it recently printed its lowest level in almost two years, with some analysts reading that metric as institutions de-risking.

To elaborate, the last time the premium sank this low, in June 2026, bitcoin bottomed a day later and then rallied about 50%.

Other data points worth mentioning are spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which just posted a $305 million comeback led by Blackrock. Meanwhile, Santiment says 30,000 wallets disappeared, an often seen capitulation pattern that has appeared near local lows.
