Pokemon Go Battle League – Best Mega Halloween Cup: Great League Edition team

The Pokemon Go Mega Halloween Cup: Great League Edition is bringing a spooky twist to the Battle League, challenging trainers to put together their strongest teams under a special set of restrictions.

While the usual Great, Ultra, and Master Leagues offer plenty of room to experiment, limited-time competitions shake up the PvP meta by introducing unique rules and eligibility requirements.

With a 1,500 CP limit, specific type restrictions, and Mega Evolution added to the mix, choosing the right Pokemon is more important than ever. So, we’ve rounded up the best picks and team recommendations to help you climb the ranks in the Mega Halloween Cup: Great League Edition.

Best team for the Pokemon Go Mega Halloween Cup: Great League Edition

One of the best teams you can use for the Mega Halloween Cup includes Forretress, Mega Greninja, and Nidoqueen, as these are three of the strongest Pokemon that should give you coverage against most common opponents.

Another team that players could try out is Mimikyu, Tinkaton, and Clodsire.

As with any League or Cup, it’s impossible to say what a true “best” team looks like in the Mega Halloween Cup: Great League Edition, as it really depends on the Pokemon your opponent sends out – and you won’t know that until the battle begins.

Still, there are a few Pokemon that can perform well in most situations, which we’ve listed below alongside their optimal movesets and weaknesses.

Best Mega Halloween Cup: Great League Edition Pokemon

Araquanid

Araquanid in Pokemon Go
  • Fast Move: Infestation
  • Charged Moves: Water Pulse and Mirror Coat
  • Type: Water/Bug
  • Resistances: Fighting, Ground, Ice, Steel, and Water
  • Weaknesses: Electric, Flying, and Rock

Araquanid takes a more methodical approach, leaning on its bulk to stay around while Infestation steadily generates energy. Its Water/Bug typing gives it useful resistances to Fighting, Ground, Steel, Water, and Ice, making it capable of absorbing plenty of punishment in the right matchup.

Water Pulse provides its main source of Water-type STAB, threatening Fire, Ground, and Rock opponents, while Mirror Coat adds Psychic coverage for Fighting and Poison-types. Neither attack is especially quick, so Araquanid works best when its durability gives it enough time to build energy and land them.

Mawile

Mawile in Pokemon Go
  • Fast Move: Fairy Wind
  • Charged Moves: Vise Grip and Iron Head
  • Type: Steel/Fairy
  • Resistances: Dragon, Bug, Dark, Fairy, Flying, Grass, Ice, Normal, Psychic, Rock, and Poison
  • Weaknesses: Fire and Ground

Mawile can make the most of its excellent Steel/Fairy typing, which provides 11 resistances and leaves Fire and Ground as its only weaknesses. Fairy Wind generates energy quickly rather than dealing significant damage, allowing Mawile to focus on its Charged Moves while absorbing attacks from favorable matchups.

Vise Grip offers a cheap Normal-type attack for chipping away at opponents and drawing shields, although it lacks STAB and struggles against Steel and Rock Pokémon. Iron Head is the stronger option, delivering Steel-type STAB against Fairy, Ice, and Rock opponents and giving Mawile a more reliable way to deal meaningful damage.

Alolan Muk

  • Fast Move: Poison Jab
  • Charged Moves: Brutal Swing and Ice Punch
  • Type: Poison/Dark
  • Resistances: Dark, Ghost, Grass, Poison, and Psychic
  • Weaknesses: Ground

With just one weakness to Ground, Alolan Muk has plenty of room to operate in this Mega Halloween Cup edition. Its Poison/Dark typing also shuts down Psychic damage while resisting Dark, and Poison Jab can pile on significant damage without waiting for a Charged Move.

When shields come into play, Brutal Swing is Alolan Muk’s main tool for forcing decisions and punishing Psychic-types with STAB damage. Ice Punch is more situational but gives it an important response to Ground Pokemon, while also providing coverage against Dragon and Flying-types.

Mega Greninja

mega greninja with a pokemon go background
  • Fast Move: Water Shuriken
  • Charged Moves: Hydro Cannon, Brutal Swing, and Surf
  • Type: Water/Dark
  • Resistances: Psychic, Dark, Fire, Ghost, Ice, Steel, and Water
  • Weaknesses: Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, and Grass

Speed is what makes Mega Greninja so dangerous, as Water Shuriken lets it cycle through Charged Moves before opponents can comfortably respond. Its Water/Dark typing also gives it useful resistances to Psychic, Ghost, Fire, and Water attacks, although its five weaknesses mean it can’t afford to take too many hits.

Few opponents will enjoy facing repeated Hydro Cannons, especially with Mega Greninja’s offensive power behind them. Brutal Swing keeps Ghost and Psychic-types in check with Dark-type STAB, while Surf provides an alternative Water attack for dealing consistent damage without relying entirely on Hydro Cannon.

Aromatisse

Aromatisse appearing in Pokemon Go Love Cup
  • Fast Move: Fairy Wind
  • Charged Move: Moonblast and Psyshock
  • Type: Fairy
  • Resistances: Bug, Dark, Dragon, and Fighting
  • Weaknesses: Poison and Steel

Aromatisse is a bulky Fairy-type that excels at handling Dragons, Dark-types, and Fighters while applying steady pressure throughout a battle. Its solid durability allows it to stay on the field long enough to take advantage of its powerful Charged Moves.

Fairy Wind is the ideal Fast Move thanks to its excellent energy generation, helping Aromatisse reach its Charged Moves quickly. Psyshock provides a cheap option for shield pressure and coverage, while Moonblast is the heavy-hitting STAB attack that can deal massive damage and potentially lower the opponent’s Attack.

Nidoqueen

Nidoqueen in Pokemon Go
  • Fast Move: Mud Slap
  • Charged Move: Earth Power and Poison Fang
  • Type: Poison/Ground
  • Resistances: Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting, Poison, and Rock
  • Weaknesses: Ground, Ice, Psychic, and Water

Nidoqueen can quickly turn favorable matchups into overwhelming ones, with Mud Slap delivering heavy Ground-type STAB damage from the start. Its Poison/Ground typing also makes it particularly effective at absorbing Fairy, Fighting, Electric, and Poison attacks, although Water, Ice, Psychic, and Ground opponents can cause trouble.

Poison Fang is the key to building momentum, offering a quick Poison-type STAB attack that lowers the opponent’s Defense and makes subsequent Mud Slaps hit even harder. Earth Power provides the heavier alternative, delivering strong Ground damage against Steel, Fire, Electric, Poison, and Rock opponents, with an additional chance to reduce their Defense.

Spidops

  • Fast Move: Shadow Claw
  • Charged Moves: Lunge and Rock Tomb
  • Type: Bug
  • Resistances: Fighting, Grass, and Ground
  • Weaknesses: Fire, Flying, and Rock

Spidops is more interested in disrupting opponents than overwhelming them with raw damage. Shadow Claw provides useful Ghost-type pressure against Psychic and Ghost enemies while generating energy, and its pure Bug typing helps it withstand Fighting, Grass, and Ground attacks.

Both Charged Moves make Spidops increasingly frustrating to face. Lunge delivers Bug-type STAB against Grass, Psychic, and Dark opponents while lowering their Attack, whereas Rock Tomb applies the same debuff with Rock coverage that can punish Fire and Flying-types, two of Spidops’ biggest weaknesses.

Morpeko (Full Belly)

pokemon go morpeko full belly
  • Fast Move: Thunder Shock
  • Charged Moves: Aura Wheel and Psychic Fangs
  • Type: Electric/Dark
  • Resistances: Psychic, Steel, Ghost, Flying, Electric, and Dark
  • Weaknesses: Bug, Fairy, Fighting, and Ground

Despite its tiny size and disappointing defense, Morpeko (Full Belly) is an outstanding Pokemon to use in this particular cup, mostly due to its Aura Wheel move.

When in combat, the Fast Move Thunder Shock will allow Morpeko to quickly access its Charged Move Aura Wheel. It is not only extremely powerful and cheap, but it also increases the user’s Attack stat by 25% every time, making Morpeko an unstoppable machine.

Combine it with Psychic Fangs for more coverage, and you’ll secure a win in most of your encounters.

Mega Sableye

  • Fast Move: Shadow Claw
  • Charged Moves: Foul Play and Dazzling Gleam
  • Type: Dark/Ghost
  • Resistances: Normal, Psychic, Poison, and Fighting
  • Weaknesses: Fairy

Mega Sableye is an awkward Pokemon to pin down, as its Dark/Ghost typing leaves Fairy as the only weakness opponents can exploit. Shadow Claw adds constant Ghost-type pressure while keeping energy flowing, making Mega Sableye difficult to play passively against.

Foul Play is its more dependable STAB option, threatening Ghost and Psychic creatures without demanding a huge energy commitment. Dazzling Gleam takes longer to unleash but adds a powerful Fairy-type surprise for Dark, Dragon, and Fighting opponents, giving Mega Sableye valuable coverage beyond its usual Ghost and Dark damage.

Forretress

pokemon go forretress
  • Fast Move: Volt Switch
  • Charged Moves: Sand Tomb and Rock Tomb
  • Type: Bug/Steel
  • Resistances: Poison, Grass, Steel, Psychic, Normal, Ice, Fairy, Dragon, and Bug
  • Weaknesses: Fire

Forretress can turn a battle into a frustrating war of attrition, gradually weakening opponents rather than relying on big knockout blows. Its Bug/Steel typing makes that strategy particularly effective, with nine resistances and only Fire as a weakness, while Volt Switch generates energy and threatens Water and Flying Pokemon with Electric damage.

The real trouble starts once Forretress begins stacking debuffs. Sand Tomb lowers the opponent’s Defense, making every follow-up attack more punishing, while Rock Tomb reduces their Attack and adds useful coverage against Fire, Flying, Bug, and Ice-types. Together, they allow Forretress to control longer matchups and steadily shift the advantage in its favor.

Klefki

pokemon go klefki
  • Fast Move: Astonish
  • Charged Moves: Foul Play and Draining Kiss
  • Type: Steel/Fairy
  • Resistances: Dragon, Bug, Rock, Psychic, Poison, Normal, Ice, Grass, Flying, Fairy, and Dark
  • Weaknesses: Fire and Ground

Klefki’s Steel/Fairy typing does much of the defensive work, giving it an impressive 11 resistances while leaving only Fire and Ground as weaknesses. Astonish adds Ghost-type damage against Psychic and Ghost opponents, helping Klefki build energy without relying on its Charged Moves for every hit.

Foul Play offers Dark coverage to keep Ghost and Psychic opponents under pressure, while Draining Kiss delivers Fairy-type STAB against Dragon, Dark, and Fighting opponents. Neither move benefits from particularly fast energy generation, so Klefki is better suited to longer battles where its resistances can give it room to operate.

Carbink (XL)

Carbink in Pokemon Go
  • Fast Move: Rock Throw
  • Charged Moves: Rock Slide and Moonblast
  • Type: Rock/Fairy
  • Resistances: Bug, Dark, Dragon, Fire, Flying, and Normal
  • Weaknesses: Grass, Ground, Steel, and Water

Carbink can be hard to get in the game, but adding this dual Rock/Fairy-type creature to your Mega Halloween Cup team is a must in the current meta.

This Pokemon’s Fast Move by default is Rock Throw, as it deals heavy damage and benefits from STAB. When it comes to Charged Moves, go with Rock Slide for a well-rounded Rock-type attack and Moonblast for some huge (albeit expensive) Fairy-type damage. This entire moveset has STAB, which makes it extra powerful.

Clodsire

pokemon go clodsire
  • Fast Move: Poison Sting
  • Charged Moves: Earthquake and Stone Edge
  • Type: Poison/Ground
  • Resistances: Poison, Electric, Rock, Fighting, Fairy, and Bug
  • Weaknesses: Ground, Ice, Psychic, and Water

Clodsire appeared out of nowhere and stole a high spot in our ranking, basically because it is good at everything. This dual Poison/Ground creature works fine as a lead, switch, or closer thanks to its good Defense, but mostly its massive Stamina of 209.

The blob Clodsire might exert low Fast Move pressure with Poison Sting, but it still manages to reach its incredible Charged Moves. Earthquake is one of the best moves of all time, and Stone Edge is a coverage nuke that allows it to hit hard. Clodsire’s access to 5 different types of moves makes it very hard to target and take down.

Tinkaton

pokemon go tinkaton
  • Fast Move: Fairy Wind
  • Charged Moves: Gigaton Hammer and Bulldoze
  • Type: Fairy/Steel
  • Resistances: Dragon, Bug, Rock, Psychic, Poison, Normal, Ice, Grass, Flying, Fairy, and Dark
  • Weaknesses: Fire and Ground

Tinkaton has one of the most forgiving defensive typings in the Battle League, resisting a huge portion of the field while fearing only Fire and Ground attacks. Fairy Wind prioritizes energy over raw Fast Move damage, allowing it to reach its much more threatening Charged Moves quickly.

Gigaton Hammer is the main attraction, giving Tinkaton a powerful Steel-type STAB attack that can punish Fairy, Ice, and Rock opponents. Bulldoze rounds out the set with valuable Ground coverage, particularly against Fire, Steel, Electric, Poison, and Rock-types that can otherwise make life difficult for it.

Mimikyu

mimikyu with a pokemon go background
  • Fast Move: Shadow Claw
  • Charged Moves: Shadow Sneak and Play Rough
  • Type: Ghost/Fairy
  • Resistances: Fighting, Bug, Dragon, and Normal
  • Weaknesses: Ghost and Steel

Mimikyu brings a useful defensive profile, with its Ghost/Fairy typing leaving it vulnerable to only Ghost and Steel attacks. It can be particularly disruptive against Fighting and Dragon opponents, while Shadow Claw combines solid Ghost-type damage with reliable energy generation.

Shadow Sneak is the quicker Charged Move, giving Mimikyu a way to maintain pressure and chip away at Ghost and Psychic-types. Play Rough takes longer to reach but hits considerably harder with Fairy-type STAB, making it the stronger option for punishing Dragon, Dark, and Fighting opponents.
