The cause of death for prolific character actor Richard Riehle has been revealed.

Riehle died on October 15 at age 78 at his home in Los Angeles. He was first reported to have died of natural causes.

According to his death certificate, which TMZ obtained, the cause of death was a stroke, with oropharyngeal cancer listed on the document as the underlying cause.

Oropharyngeal cancer is a rare type of throat cancer that can begin in the tongue, the roof of the mouth, the tonsils, and the walls of the throat. Additionally, according to the National Institutes of Health, patients with cancer are at an increased risk of ischemic stroke.

The statement continued, “A remarkable actor whose career in theater, film, and television spanned nearly five decades and more than 400 projects, Richard leaves behind an extraordinary legacy.”

Riehle was most recognized for his role in Office Space as Tom Smykowski. In the film, after being laid off, his character is involved in an unexpected accident and is awarded a large settlement, which allows him to create the “Jump to Conclusions” mat.

His credits spanned decades, totaling over 400. Other notable film credits include Of Mice and Men (1992), The Fugitive (1993), Joe Dirt (2001), and Bridesmaids (2011), to name a few. On television, he had roles in The Golden Girls, Ally McBeal, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, American Housewife, and most recently Barry.

Before his death, Riehle had also filmed several projects that have not yet been released.

“Beyond his immense talent, he will be remembered for his genuine goodness, boundless kindness, and unwavering generosity, particularly toward emerging actors and filmmakers, whom he encouraged and supported at every opportunity. Our industry has lost an exceptional talent, and our community has lost a truly wonderful man,” the representative concluded.
