Capcom has been on a roll with both the mainline Resident Evil entries and a consistent release of remakes. However, could the series be coming to an end? While that seems unlikely, according to executive producer Jun Takeuchi, the current RE story may end sooner than many may expect.
In an interview with Yahoo Japan (and roughly translated by IGN), Takeuchi stated that, with the release of Resident Evil Requiem, he believes that the conclusion of the main story may come in the next 10 years. “With the release of Requiem this year, I feel like the first 10 years have come to a close, so I think the conclusion will come in the next 10 years.”
The “first 10 years” is a reference to the release of Resident Evil 7: Biohazard in 2017 (for the main series) and Resident Evil 2 remake (for the remake series) in 2019, not the entire franchise, as the first game was released in 1996.
Takeuchi also stated that the series’ story was not planned out from the beginning. “When we were planning RE2 and creating a 10-year branding concept, this was the most challenging aspect. If you play through all of them, I think you’ll realize the meaning behind the order of the remakes,” he said.
Notably, Capcom’s string of modern remakes did not include a remake of Resident Evil 1, which already got a remake back in 2002 for the GameCube. Though, there have been some rumors that Capcom is planning another remake of the very first game.
Takeuchi also assured that there will be “multiple” Resident Evil game releases between now and the presumed story end 10 years from now.
Resident Evil Veronica, a remake of Resident Evil Code: Veronica, will be the next game in the series and will be released sometime in 2027.
