James Gunn has shared a clear answer on Jai Courtney‘s potential comeback as Captain Boomerang in the DCU. The 40-year-old actor played the iconic comic character in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, helmed by Gunn himself.
During an episode of the DC Studios Showcase podcast, James Gunn responded to a fan who was curious to know whether Courtney will return as Captain Boomerang in the future. Gunn revealed, “Jai can play another character, as we’ve already established, because I love Jai. He was great. He’s a fun guy to work with, a fantastic actor.”
However, the director made it clear that Courtney won’t play Captain Boomerang again. Explaining the reason, he added, “We also have the rule in the DCU that if you die, you die. I mean, there are going to be clones and all this stuff. I don’t care.”
What happened to Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang in The Suicide Squad?
Jai Courtney was part of the ensemble cast of The Suicide Squad. The movie also featured Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, among others.
Courtney’s Captain Boomerang didn’t make it out alive in the film. He was killed during the beach battle on the island of Corto Maltese. A helicopter crashes and explodes, resulting in his death.
While his character died on-screen, Courtney later mentioned that Gunn told him not to rule out his DCU comeback as Captain Boomerang. During an interview last year, Courtney revealed a conversation he had with Gunn. “And James is like, ‘You know these rules don’t really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?’ And I was like, ‘Hell yeah.’ So I have hope.”
However, it seems Gunn has now changed his mind. Courtney may return, but he won’t be Captain Boomerang again.
