This year’s Oscars are coming into focus, and in the Best International Feature race, several films from the 2026 Cannes Film Festival are in the running, most notably Cristian Mungiu‘s Palme d’Or winner, “Fjord.” But don’t count out “La Bola Negra” or Sandra Wollner‘s Un Certain Regard winner “Everytime” as contenders.
In “Everytime,” a tragedy right before a family holiday brings a mother, her daughter, and a teenage boy together. A year later, the trio reunites to take the trip, leading to an unexpectedly hallucinatory exploration of their grief.
Here’s an official synopsis for “Everytime,” courtesy of 1-2 Special:
On the eve of a family vacation, a shocking tragedy disrupts the lives of Ella, her younger daughter Melli, and their teenage family friend Lux. One year later, after drifting in a state of suspended grief, the trio reunite and embark on a trip to Tenerife, hoping to recreate the family holiday that never happened. Under a strange new sun, they find that the past, present, and future begin to overlap.
“Everytime” stars Birgit Minichmayr, Lotte Shirin Keiling, Naomi Elia Richard, Tristan Lopez, and Carla Hüttermann.
Wollner writes and directs “Everytime,” with Lixi Frank, Viktoria Stolphe, and David Bohun on board as producers. Think that “Everytime” has a similar visual ambiance to the 2022 festival favorite “Aftersun“? Well, that’s because both films share the same cinematographer in Gregory Oke.
As noted earlier, “Everytime” won the Un Certain Regard prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, as well as the Heart of Sarajevo Grand Prize at the Sarajevo Film Festival. Those victories should improve its chances of being nominated for Best International Feature Film, but let’s see whether the film makes the Academy’s final list of nominees.
“Everytime” gets a one-week qualifying theatrical run at Film At Lincoln Center starting on November 6; it then opens nationwide next year on February 12, 2027. Watch the teaser trailer for the German drama below.
