Werwulf has received an early runtime update ahead of its highly anticipated release. Directed by Robert Eggers, the horror film boasts a star-studded cast featuring Willem Dafoe and several other notable actors.

According to reports, Werwulf will run for exactly two hours. The runtime listing comes ahead of its Christmas Day release.

Directed by Robert Eggers, Werwulf is a period gothic folk horror film set in 14th-century England. Co-written alongside Icelandic author Sjón, the story centers on a rural town haunted by a mysterious feral beast as one man and his family fight for survival.

Willem Dafoe leads a star-studded cast in Robert Eggers’ latest horror movie

Eggers’ Werwulf features a star-studded ensemble cast, with Dafoe portraying the Old Hunter, alongside Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp as the central family members. The supporting cast includes Ralph Ineson, Jack Morris, Ned Dennehy, Bodhi Rae Breathnach, Kate Dickie, Hector Byker, and Jan Bijvoet.

The official logline describes the project as Eggers’ “most visceral and haunting experience yet,” promising “a harrowing tale of devotion, damnation and the devil within.”

In a recent chat with Esquire, Eggers reflected on his creative process and what fans can expect from his upcoming horror tale.

“The cool thing about going back into the past is that you can kind of hit a reset button,” Eggers shared. “So all the clichés of being bitten by a werewolf and silver bullets and a lot of the stuff that has become almost campy doesn’t exist in the mythology of this movie. So you don’t need to have seen Lon Chaney Jr.’s The Wolf Man or An American Werewolf in London to get what’s going on here.”

The director further explained, “So the movie takes place around 1300, and that’s as late as it could be because once there were no wolves in England, there was no more werewolf lore in England. That became interesting: it was going to be set so medieval.”

Werwulf will hit the theaters on December 25, 2026.
