Run-DMC member Darryl McDaniels was involved in a car accident on Friday morning in Los Angeles. Reports from TMZ say the incident involved the SUV he was in and a garbage truck.
The crash was on the 105 Freeway in West Athens, a Los Angeles neighborhood near LAX.
NBC Los Angeles reported that the rapper had complained of minor pain, but he appeared in good spirits in video footage after the accident.
Per TMZ, sources said McDaniels was a passenger, not the driver. No injuries were reported at this time.
Footage of the crash was shared via the Citizen App and across social media, including X. The Citizen App said the situation had been resolved and that the SUV McDaniels was traveling in had been towed from the scene.
The videos show the vehicle pointed backward with shattered glass inside. Another angle shows that the SUV was totaled on the right side.
The Citizen App’s update on X was captioned, “An SUV and a garbage truck collided on S Hoover Street in Los Angeles, with a witness reporting that Darryl “DMC” McDaniels was at the scene. No serious injuries were apparent, and the rapper’s involvement has not been officially confirmed.”
CHP said the call came in at 11:43 AM and involved a garbage truck and another vehicle. The scene was cleared shortly after, and authorities provided no other information. It remains unclear what led to the collision.
McDaniels is the DMC in Run-DMC, the influential hip-hop group formed in the early 1980s. The group is considered one of the pioneers of hip-hop and helped pave the way for new-school hip-hop to take center stage.
The group was formed in New York City by Joseph Simmons, McDaniels, and Jason Mizell, better known by their stage names Reverend Run, DMC, and Jam Master Jay. In 2002, Mizell was shot and killed in Queens, which contributed to the end of the group. Run-DMC did not release any new music after Mizell’s death. In 2023, Simmons and McDaniels gave their final performance as Run-DMC in New York City.
