62 Years Later, Clint Eastwood’s Western Classic Remains One of the Greatest Movies of All Time

Clint Eastwood is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors of all time, and he found success across multiple genres.

However, one genre he seemed to master, especially during his prime, was the Western.

Eastwood starred in some of the greatest films in the genre’s history, including the 1964 classic A Fistful of Dollars, directed by Sergio Leone.

A Fistful of Dollars helped launch Eastwood into stardom. Although it first premiered in Italy in 1964 as a European co-production, it didn’t make its theatrical debut in the United States until 1967.

The Rotten Tomatoes movie description reads, Wandering gunfighter Joe (Eastwood) arrives in the Mexican village of San Miguel in the midst of a power struggle among sheriff John Baxter and the three Rojo brothers. When a regiment of Mexican soldiers bearing gold is waylaid by the Rojo brothers, Joe is hired by Esteban to join the gang, but he plays one side against the other.”

Alongside Eastwood, who portrays Joe, more iconically known as “The Man With No Name,” the film also stars Gian Maria Volontè as Ramón Rojo, José Calvo as Silvanito, Wolfgang Lukschy as John Baxter, Sieghardt Rupp as Esteban Rojo and Joseph Egger as Piripero.

A Fistful of Dollars Ranks Among the Greatest Movies of All Time

While the film often appears on lists of the greatest Westerns of all time, it also holds an impressive 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes, placing it among the platform’s highest-rated films. It also has a 7.9 out of 10 rating on IMDb.

Rotten Tomatoes ranked it No. 8 on its list of the 100 greatest Westerns of all time and also included it on its list of the 300 best movies of all time.
