Jason Statham’s 2 Giant-Shark Movies That Made Nearly $930 Million Just Landed on Hulu

Jason Statham’s two shark movies are now on Hulu.

The Meg (2018) and Meg 2: The Trench (2023) were both added on Nov. 1, according to Hulu’s November schedule. Spanish-language versions of both went up the same day.

The two movies made nearly $930 million worldwide combined.

The Meg

Statham plays Jonas Taylor, a rescue diver who runs into a megalodon, a prehistoric shark that was supposed to be extinct.

Jon Turteltaub directed it. The story is loosely based on Steve Alten’s 1997 novel “Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror,” and Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose and Cliff Curtis co-star.

The movie cost between $130 million and $178 million to make. It opened in the U.S. on Aug. 10, 2018, and made $529.3 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.

Most of that came from outside North America. The U.S. and Canada brought in $145.5 million, and China alone brought in $153 million.

Meg 2: The Trench

Statham returned as Jonas for the sequel, which Ben Wheatley directed. Wu Jing joined the cast as Jiuming Zhang.

It opened in U.S. theaters on Aug. 4, 2023, with $30 million and ended its domestic run at $82.6 million. Worldwide, it made $398.5 million, per Box Office Mojo.

That’s about $131 million less than the first movie, but it pushed the franchise to $927.8 million.

No Word on a Meg 3

There’s no official news on a third movie. Around the time the sequel came out in 2023, Wheatley said there had been internal discussions about one, and that it would depend on how Meg 2 performed.

What Else Is New on Hulu

The Meg movies were part of a long list of titles Hulu added on Nov. 1. Aliens (1986) arrived for its 40th anniversary, along with The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), Knight and Day (2010), The Last Duel (2021) and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017).
