1979 Classic Ranked ‘Best War Movie of All Time’ Was Rejected by Clint Eastwood

An iconic 1979 drama that is widely regarded as a total masterpiece has been ranked as the “Best War Movie of All Time.” The film’s legendary status is especially remarkable since Apocalypse Now infamously had an extremely troubled production and because Clint Eastwood rejected the film.

Who Ranked ‘Apocalypse Now’ as the ‘Best War Movie of All Time’?

In January 2026, Time Out updated its ranking of the “50 best war movies of all time” and included Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now at No. 2 on the list. As impressive as that is, it was ranked the No. 1 “Best War Movie of All Time” by CinemaBlend in December 2023 and Paste Magazine in June 2023. Remarkably, those are only some examples of the many times the film has been named as one of the greatest war films ever produced.

There are many reasons why Apocalypse Now is nearly universally respected, including that it reimagines war as a descent into madness and a vortex that drags everyone in. Another is that it features truly iconic set pieces, lines of dialogue, and performances from Martin Sheen, Marlon Brando, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, and more. For all those reasons and more, Francis Ford Coppola’s movie deserves its celebrated legacy.

Why Clint Eastwood Rejected Apocalypse Now

Martin Sheen’s starring performance in Apocalypse Now as Willard plays a pivotal role in the film connecting with viewers. As a result, it is rightfully regarded as one of his most iconic roles ever. With that in mind, it is amazing that Clint Eastwood told The Hollywood Reporter in March 2015 that he was offered the role first and rejected it because of the project’s filming schedule.

“Coppola called me up and asked me if I wanted to do the young guy I think later played by Martin Sheen. And asked me if I wanted to play that and I said gee, I don’t know I don’t understand this show too much. I did read Heart of Darkness when I was young and so I kind of knew where it was going but then I said no, I don’t think I can go off for that long a time. He was going to go 16 weeks in the Philippines.”

It is fascinating to think about how different Apocalypse Now would have been if Eastwood had taken the role. After all, he is renowned for shooting movies quickly. As a result, it is hard to imagine him putting up with all of the production troubles that plagued Apocalypse Now during its filming, including its many delays. Additionally, he is a unique actor who seems like he would have brought a very different energy to the role.
