Sometimes it’s easy to forget that Marshals is a direct sequel to Yellowstone. Unlike Dutton Ranch, the week-to-week stories of Marshals aren’t really about a massive family dynasty. Instead, more often than not, the audience is keeping the flame of the Dutton memory alive. Kayce’s aggressive integration tactics sometimes recall the glory days of Yellowstone, but sometimes a bigger reference shows up and reminds us of the complex place that Kayce comes from. In Marshal’s Season 2, Episode 5, “Secret Weapon,” Kayce talks a little bit about his siblings from Yellowstone. But exactly which Dutton brother are we meant to remember here?
Marshals Season 2, Episode 5 references both Beth Dutton and Jamie Dutton
While trapped in a collapsed barn, Kayce presses a possible accomplice of a bomber for information about the whereabouts of his brother, Derek McCoy, who is a suspected bomber. Kayce tries to connect to the younger McCoy by bringing up his own experiences with siblings with huge personalities. When McCoy tries to mock Kayce for being pushed around by his sister, Kayce says, “She’d eat you for lunch.”
This refers, of course, to Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly), who has not appeared in Marshals since she and Rip (Cole Hauser) moved out of Montana and into their own spinoff series, Dutton Ranch, which takes place in Texas. Though a crossover has been discussed between the two series, nothing is definite yet. But still, the legend of Beth looms large.
Kayce also mentions his “brothers,” which refers to Lee Dutton (Dave Annable), who died in the first episode of Yellowstone, as well as Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley), who later became a villain on the show. At first, Kayce simply recalls that his brother “forged his own path.” But later, we see his fury at Jamie’s various betrayals when Kayce says: “One thing I forgot to tell you about my brother…he let the wrong people determine his fate”
Marshals isn’t done with Yellowstone connections
While this hasn’t happened in Marshals Season 2, yet, Jefferson White is set to return soon as Jimmy Hurdstrom. At one point, Jimmy was going ot get his own Yellowstone spinoff, but now, the character will join Kayce on Marshals.
Jimmy will appear in an episode called “Sidewinder,” though it’s not clear which week that episode will air, or if he’ll return in an episode that airs sooner than the one named. The following episodes are confirmed for the next few weeks:
- 11.15: Marshals Season 2 Episode 6 “Roughstock.”
- 11.22: Marshals Season 2, Episode 7, “Under the Influence.”
Marshals is taking one week off and will not air a new episode on Sunday, November 8.
Marshals streams on Paramount+.
