Inside Joe Burrow’s In-Season Routine: Why Stepping Away From the Gym Is His Secret to Fourth-Quarter Composure

If you follow sports at all, you know Joe Burrow. Before turning Cincinnati into a perennial contender, Burrow went from a backup at Ohio State to engineering an undefeated national title run at LSU, taking home the Heisman Trophy along the way. That historic stretch made him the consensus top pick in the 2020 draft, and he has spent the last few seasons proving the hype was real.

Fans call him “Joe Cool” and “Joe Brrr” for his icy composure late in fourth quarters, but that calm demeanor starts with obsessive preparation.

“During the season, you’re always thinking about the next game and what you need to do to prepare,” he says. “I’ve learned that giving yourself time to step away is part of that preparation, too. For me, it’s about finding a balance between training and recovery and being intentional about rest. That time to reset helps me come back with a clear head, ready for the week ahead.”

The grind of an NFL season adds up quickly, and Burrow knows the physical toll firsthand. After overcoming a torn ACL during his rookie campaign, he bounced back to lead Cincinnati straight to Super Bowl LVI. His workout regimen evolves as the calendar turns, shifting from heavy strength building in the spring to durability and arm upkeep once game weeks arrive.

“In the offseason, you have more time to build strength and work on things you want to improve,” Burrow says. “Once the season starts, the priority is being ready to play every week. You’re maintaining the work you’ve already done and paying attention to how your body feels. I’m intentional about both training and recovery. You learn when to push and when you need to give yourself time to recover.”

Burrow continues to rewrite record books with pinpoint precision, but off the field, his pre-game tunnel walks have turned into must-watch events. He treats the concrete hallway beneath the stadium like a runway, swapping generic team tracksuits for bold silhouettes, tailored layers, and standout accessories. That distinct eye for style made his partnership with Alo Yoga an easy fit, bringing his personal aesthetic to the brand’s fall lineup.

“The Alo team and I plan the looks ahead of time, so there’s intention behind what I’m wearing,” Burrow says. “It’s something I enjoy and a chance to express myself before the game. I want to walk in feeling comfortable, confident, and ready. Feeling good in what I’m wearing is part of that.”

For Burrow, game day outfits are less about chasing trends and more about quiet confidence. The campaign leans into that philosophy, spotlighting heavy knit layers, relaxed trousers, and clean outerwear that look tailored without sacrificing an ounce of comfort.

“I gravitate toward pieces that feel elevated but are still easy to wear. With Alo, I can build a wardrobe that feels like me, whether I’m arriving on game day or traveling. Working with the team has given me the chance to try new things and think differently about how I put a look together, while still feeling comfortable in what I’m wearing.”
