We should normalize couples therapy and premarital counseling. This does feel more male-female hetero of it all, but that’s what I personally have experience with, so I’m probably thinking of it in that world. I know so many men that are unwilling to go to couples therapy, and they think something is wrong with the relationship if you’re pursuing that.
My husband and I did premarital counseling. I didn’t realize it, but it’s only really common in more religious folk. I told my husband I want to do premarital counseling, but obviously we don’t practice a specific faith. And I remember people being like, How are you going to do that without being Christian or spiritual? And I was like, how is this not normal? Let’s go into this as prepared and strong and empathetic and understanding as possible.
So, you suggest couples counseling regardless of if you’re trying to fix or address anything specific?
Sometimes there might be something to fix, but what I’m saying is [use it] to strengthen something that’s already secure and good. My husband and I are so great, but whenever we go to couples counseling session I feel so deeply connected to him. And then, we’ll go get breakfast after and keep talking about what we talked about [in the session]. It’s quality time.
You had a real ‘70s aesthetic going for a majority of your early career, but now you’ve really leaned into this ‘50s Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe look. Where did that come from?
I was embarrassed to be on camera with you today because I was like, “I don’t have time to put that pin set in!” The Grace Kelly muse has been such an inspiration for me. It was fun to play with that, and it’s probably the most actualized I’ve ever felt aesthetically. The hair chop was so scary, but then the minute I looked at myself in the mirror, I was like, “Oh, you look like you. You look like yourself.” Like I had arrived at something that I should have always known, but was not brave enough to do. It’s been a brave era.
