Denis Villeneuve says James Bond will be the “powerful rocket” to finally pull him away from Dune

Denis Villeneuve has spent the last decade in the world of Dune, but the acclaimed director is more than ready to leave Arrakis behind and finally tackle his James Bond movie.

Villeneuve on Leaving Dune for Bond

After Dune and Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve has returned one more time for Dune: Part Three, which will conclude his story. “I said, ‘Maybe it’s a good idea to go back to this project, not out of nostalgia, not because I miss it, but the opposite — I’m tired of it,’” Villeneuve told Empire. “I want to make sure that I will be severe with the material. That I will not be complacent.“

Next up will be the new Bond movie. “I thought, ‘When it’s done, I need a very powerful rocket to pull me away from Arrakis.’ When I was asked to do the next Bond, I said: ‘Okay, this is what I need.’“

After spending so many years in a world filled with spice, giant sandworms, and intergalactic politics, Bond will be a very big departure, and I can’t wait to see what he does with it.

Dune: Part Three Will Be Very Different

The third Dune movie is set 17 years after the events of Part Two, so it’s a different sort of story. “The idea was to try to make a movie that will have the same DNA — it’s a Dune movie — but it’s a very different movie. It has a different pacing,” he said. “We are back with the same characters, but this time the world has totally changed. Their psyches, their perspective on reality has totally changed, and Paul is living with the burden of what he created, trying to find a way out of this spiral of violence.“

Dune: Part Three will hit theaters on December 18.

Bond 26

Villeneuve will direct the new James Bond movie, the first to be under the full creative control of Amazon MGM Studios, from a script by Steven Knight. As for who will play Bond…we still don’t know. The search began earlier this year with plenty of actors up for the role. Callum Turner (Masters of the Air), Jack O’Connell (Sinners), and Jack Lowden (Slow Horses) have been rumoured to be on the shortlist, with Gary Oldman saying the role has been secretly cast and that he’s hoping it’s Lowden.
