Local Omoda C4 production lets Chery present itself as a South African manufacturer as its Omoda and Jaecoo brands grow
Chery Group will start vehicle production in South Africa with the Omoda C4, which will be built at the Rosslyn plant in Gauteng that it bought from Nissan South Africa earlier this year. Gasoline, hybrid and fully electric versions of the crossover are due on sale locally in 2027.
Before production begins, the plant will receive infrastructure and utility upgrades, while a localisation programme aims to grow South Africa’s supplier base and raise the share of locally sourced parts. Taking over an established site gives Chery a quicker route into local manufacturing than building a new factory.
Offering three powertrains also lets buyers match the car to their driving and charging access. First shown as the C3, the C4 targets younger customers with angular styling and connected cabin features, including a 13.2-inch central screen, a 540-degree camera system and 50W wireless charging on international versions. Pricing, final specifications and launch timing will be confirmed closer to launch.
Shannon Gahagan, Head of Brand and Marketing for Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa, said: “Investing in local production is a decision about the kind of business we want Omoda & Jaecoo to become in South Africa. The C4 will give us a place in the country’s manufacturing industry, while its petrol, hybrid and fully electric range will give our customers greater choice when buying an Omoda.”
