Peter Berg Says ‘Call of Duty’ Movie Will Have a Strong Soul About Being a Warrior

The Call of Duty series has a lot happening right now, with the release of the latest game in the franchise arriving on consoles and PC, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. But a movie adaptation of the iconic series is already in production, under the direction of Peter Berg. And fans of the games can expect a movie that is much deeper, with a story that goes beyond just shooting everything.

During a press junket for his film The Mosquito Bowl, Peter Berg spoke with Comic Book about working on the Call of Duty movie he is also directing. He talked about how there’s going to be a lot more heart and deeper exploration of what it means to be a warrior. It won’t be a surface level film with violence, but something that explores the cost of war and its effects on people.

“This is not just ‘Hey, let’s shoot them all up and shoot popcorn!’ Like, there’s a soul underneath it, that I understand that Taylor Sheridan understands, and I think probably not quite as graphically violent as Mosquito Bowl, but there will be a very strong soul, and consequence of war within the film, called ‘duty.”

Peter also praised the story and characters of the Modern Warfare parts of the Call of Duty games. He feels they have a lot more to offer audiences when it comes to telling a story about real people. “These are very nuanced storylines; like, there’s a real soul to the Modern Warfare universe… And, yes, there’s violence, and there’s hardware, and equipment, and there’s killing, but underneath it I think the game, and the craters of the game, are really looking at the cost of war, the cost of having to be a warrior who’s, for whatever reason, chosen to put himself between real danger and the rest of us, and the burden that these guys carry.”

Although plot details about the Call of Duty movie are not completely known, it’s been clear that Peter’s film will draw from the Modern Warfare era of the franchise. Fans have wanted to know if characters from the games will appear in the movie, but Peter hasn’t revealed anything just yet.

The Call of Duty movie is written by Taylor Sheridan, who has previously worked on other military-related projects, like the Paramount television show Lioness. The movie is being produced by Paramount Pictures and Activision, and is set to release in theaters in June 2028.
