Over A Year After a Michael Jordan-Kobe Bryant Autograph Collectible Sold For $12.9 Million, a LeBron James-MJ Card Has Come Up Incredibly Short

One of the greatest sports card sales at auction took place last August when the 2007–08 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection Dual Logoman Autographs Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant 1-of-1 card sold for a record $12.932 million through Heritage Auctions.

A sale of such magnitude in an industry worth over $308 billion makes sense given that it contains autographs from ‘His Airness’ and ‘The Black Mamba’.

However, when a similar opportunity arose for a card to be bought that contains signatures from Michael Jordan and LeBron James, it simply didn’t make the splash many collectors believed it would.

Fanatics Collect’s Premier Auction featured the 1-of-1 2007 UD Black Dual White LeBron James & Michael Jordan PATCH AUTO DNA 10. After 49 bids, it sold for $630k. This is after adding the platform’s 20% buyer’s premium.

In a vacuum, this amount is quite a lot for a card. But given the current state of the sports trading card industry (worth over $14 billion), it had the potential to enter seven-figure territory.

Not only does it contain game-worn swatches from both legends, but it also features dual hard-signed silver-ink autographs rated 10 by PSA.

What may be holding the card back is the exclusion of a PSA rating for the card’s condition, as only the autographs have been assessed. And well, pitting this card’s worth against an ‘Upper Deck Exquisite Collection’ card might not be the fairest of comparisons.

Other Cards Featuring Michael Jordan and LeBron James Have Sold for More

Funnily enough, cards featuring the aforementioned NBA icons on their own have sold for more.

The 2003-04 Upper Deck Exquisite Collection LeBron James Rookie Patch Autograph, for example, sold privately at a PWCC Auction in 2021 for a whopping $5.2 million.

The card was rated a 9 by BGS, and the blue-ink autograph was a 10. It also contained a multi-color player-worn jersey patch from his rookie photo shoot.

When it comes to MJ, his most expensive solo card ever sold is the 1997-98 Upper Deck Game Jersey card. It features a jersey swatch from the 1992 All-Star Game where he led the East with 18 points, 5 assists, and 2 steals.

This collectible sold for $4.25 million via Goldin. It was rated a 6 by PSA, and the autograph was rated a 9. If these ratings were a bit higher, the card’s value would’ve skyrocketed past the $5M mark with ease.

It should be noted that a card featuring both LeBron and Jordan sold for an astronomical price in the past. And wouldn’t you know it, it was an ‘Upper Deck Exquisite Collection’ card.

The Michael Jordan/LeBron James 2006-07 Upper Deck Exquisite dual NBA Logoman patch autograph sold for a whopping $10 million last year.

So, while it was surprising to see a card featuring the two GOATs fail to crack $1 million at auction, it is clear that the collection it came from and the lack of a formal PSA rating were the main ‘culprits’ holding its value back.
