S-Game’s “kungfupunk” action RPG brings fast-paced martial arts combat and Donnie Yen choreography to PS5 and PC.

The steady flow of martial arts games continues. After games like Sekiro, Ghost of Tsushima and Onimusha have made a splash with gamers recently, Phantom Blade Zero, the upcoming action RPG from developer S-Game, combines the spectacle of classic Hong Kong martial arts cinema with dark fantasy, mechanical monstrosities and lightning-fast swordplay.
Players take control of Soul, an elite assassin framed for the murder of his master and left with a devastating wound that gives him just 66 days to live. Hunted by former allies, he must navigate a dangerous world of conspiracies, betrayal and supernatural threats while searching for the truth behind his predicament. The setting blends traditional Chinese wuxia storytelling with industrial machinery and bizarre fantasy elements, a distinctive aesthetic the developers describe as “kungfupunk.”

Combat is the game’s biggest selling point. Built using Unreal Engine 5 and motion-capture technology, Phantom Blade Zero features elaborate martial arts sequences designed to evoke the choreography of vintage kung-fu films. Players can wield more than 30 primary weapons and 20 additional weapon types known as Phantom Edges, creating opportunities to experiment with different fighting styles. Martial arts legend Donnie Yen has also contributed as a creative consultant, helping bring authenticity to the game’s combat and cinematic presentation.

With its combination of lightning-fast battles, spectacular boss encounters and a world that looks equal parts ancient China and industrial nightmare, Phantom Blade Zero has the potential to be one of the year’s standout action releases. Whether its ambitious combat and storytelling can sustain the excitement beyond the impressive trailers remains to be seen, but fans of stylish action games won’t have to wait much longer to find out.

Phantom Blade Zero arrives worldwide on October 29, with North American players getting it a day early. The game is available on PC and PS5 (sorry Xbox) and pre-orders are open now. Check out the trailer below for the final look at Phantom Blade Zero’s gameplay before launch.
