Miley Cyrus broke down in tears during her recent Hollywood Bowl show while paying tribute to the late singer-songwriter Dolly Parton. She sat on the side of the stage and made a heart-wrenching monologue about missing Parton before covering one of her most enduring tracks.
Six songs into her show in support of her latest album, Bass Persuades, Cyrus sang a rendition of Parton’s 1973 hit, “Jolene.” The actress and singer admitted she had only ever seen Parton, who was her godmother, perform once on stage. And that performance was also at the Hollywood Bowl.
On stage, Cyrus added that Parton asked the “Flowers” singer to join her on stage but she declined. “Like so many things Dolly did that I didn’t understand it at the time, sitting here with you all right now, feeling her all around me, knowing that she’s right here beside me every day, all the time, more than she could be when she was here. I feel her, now more than ever.”
According to the 33-year-old singer, Parton opened the show with “The Best of Both Worlds,” the theme song from Hannah Montana, before proudly telling the crowd her goddaughter was in the audience.
Cyrus tearfully told the crowd that she “missed” the country music icon and can’t wait to see her again. ” Some of the greatest music that we have today was written, produced and performed by my Aunt Dolly,” the “Wrecking Ball” singer concluded.
Parton passed away in August at the age of 80, with Cyrus paying tribute on social media at the time. “Me and Dolly, we are eternal. Nothing in this life could tear us apart,” she revealed.
Miley kicked off her 18-track show with the track “Orbit” before adding fan favorites like “Party in the USA,” “The Climb,” and “We Can’t Stop.”
