Charles Barkley Hilariously Fails Over and Over During an All-Time ‘Who He Play For?’ Segment

It’s no secret that ESPN’s Inside the NBA studio show has been a gold mine for absurd comedic moments and a treasured property of the league for decades now.

Part of the show’s beauty and widespread popularity that originated on TNT has clearly been the presence of the irreplaceable Charles Barkley, but it’s also been the animated panel’s innate ability to somehow keep things fresh over the years with a general “let it fly” organic approach to how the show goes down.

Following the Thunder’s 96-84 win over the Nuggets on Thursday night, Barkley may have delivered one of the funniest moments in the show’s existence during its “Who He Play For?” segment, which is sincerely a tremendous feat given Inside the NBA‘s extensive catalog of memorable classics.

Barkley Keeps Failing the ‘Who He Play For?’ Test Even After Getting the Answers

The concept of “Who He Play For?” is really very simple and should be rather easy, but not with Barkley seated as the test-taker.

In short, producers throw up a photo of an NBA player and Barkley must correctly identify the team said player currently suits up for.

During what turned out to be a lengthy segment, which is really just over six minutes long but sounds like years in internet time, it is absolutely well worth the watch from start to finish, as Shaq elected to see how Barkley would fare if kept taking the same test.

Beginning with Moe Wagner, whose photo appeared to freeze Barkley up into a thousand-yard stare, and continuing on with Buddy Hield, Taurean Prince, Mo Bamba, Aaron Wiggins, as well as Garrett Temple — who is now retired and serves as an assistant coach for the Dallas Mavericks — it was a colossal failure across the board.

Was it surprising? Hardly.

But the key is that with each wrong answer, Barkley was immediately given the correct answer of the current team for each player shown, both verbally from Johnson and with the team’s logo shown on-screen.

So after five straight fails on Wagner, Hield, Prince, Bamba, and Wiggins, along with the bonus guess on Temple only being partially correct in that Barkley simply knew he was coaching somewhere in the NBA, Shaq asked Smith the following:

“Kenny, if we replay the game right now, how many will he [Barkley] get?”

Now this is where the comedy dials up to a ridiculous level, with the show’s production crew understandably having almost no way to stifle the laughter, which is often the case on Inside the NBA.

Amazingly, Sir Charles only managed to get two of the five players correct in the same exact sequence of players he had just been shown seconds before.

“This is the greatest game of ‘Who He Play For?’ of all time!” Johnson said with a laugh.

So, one more round?

Of course there was one more round.

Barkley ended up doing his “best” work there, getting three of the five players correct, with an exasperated Kenny Smith — who could barely stay in his seat throughout the bubbling absurdity — hilariously saying, “We gave him the answers to the test, and he still failed the test!”

This moment alone is exactly why Inside the NBA has never really had a specific time to end the show.

It ends when it ends, and no one in that studio really ever knows when it will end.

Additionally, Shaq probably deserves some sort of official media medal of honor for suggesting that the crew continue running the same “Who He Play For?” test at Barkley just to see which answers the NBA Hall of Famer could retain that he had literally just been given.

Thankfully, for the viewing audience and production crew heard laughing throughout, Barkley did no such thing and ended up bringing yet another instant classic for NBA fans.
