Bus Crash Following High School Football Game Leaves 25 Hospitalized

A frightening bus crash in Georgia Friday night resulted in the hospitalization of 25 people, including 22 high school students, according to multiple reports.

The crash, which involved an overturned bus carrying the Salem High School football program, occurred around 10:48 p.m. local time Friday in Rockdale County, writes FOX 5 Atlanta. The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) says the bus struck a Black Kia Soul while attempting to make a right turn onto State Route 138, via PEOPLE.

“After impact, the Kia rotated counter-clockwise approximately 180 degrees and came to a final uncontrolled rest facing south in the right northbound lane,” said the GSP in a statement. “After impact with the Kia, the school bus continued off the roadway and onto the east shoulder of State Route 138. Once on the shoulder, the school bus began to overturn and rolled. The school bus nearly made 1 full rotation before coming to a final uncontrolled rest on the passenger’s side, facing south.”

Injuries and hospitalizations, but no deaths

Rockdale County Public Schools said 27 people–17 student-athletes, seven trainers, two coaches and the driver–were aboard the bus. Twenty-two students and three adults were taken to the hospital, said Cindy Ball, the chief community relations officer for the district.

“Twenty-two students and three staff members were transported for medical treatment. Thankfully, there were no causalities,” Ball said. “Our students and staff are receiving the care they need. School and district staff were at area hospitals to support them and their families and to check on everyone’s well-being. We will continue to share information as it becomes available.”

All lanes were closed on Highway 138 following the crash, said Atlanta News First. Salem was returning from an away game against Greater Atlanta Christian School when the accident occurred.
