The box-office looks set to be an interesting one this weekend with several new titles and several returning titles battling it out.
While DC Studios’ “Clayface” has scored mixed/positive reviews with critics, its audience scores are quite high, with a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes – the best score for any project in Gunn & Safran’s DC Universe to date. PostTrak exit polls at cinemas similarly paint it at 4.5/5 stars.
“Clayface” pulled in $3.5 million in previews and seems on track for a $23-25 million start domestically – not too shabby for a movie that cost $44 million.
A24’s “You Can See Everything” pulled in $25.6 million in its first week in total and is expected to do strong business in its second weekend, likely pulling in a number better than its opening weekend result. Estimates are currently at around $19 million.
Not faring so well is LAIKA’s stop-motion animated title “Wildwood”. Reviews are stellar, but the Travis Knight-directed film pulled just $1 million in previews and a further $3.2 million on opening day. For now, it’s looking like an $11-13 million opening weekend debut, which is on par with “Kubo and the Two Strings”. It’ll likely take third.
Fourth will go to “Street Fighter” with around $9.5 million – a very steep drop of around 79% from its opening weekend.
The comedy “Wicker,” starring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgard, took in $620,000 in previews and has landed very good scores – it’s expected to debut around $6 million in fifth place. Also opening is Taika Waititi’s “Klara and the Sun,” which has only a limited release and looks set to take in just $900,000 for the entire three-day weekend.
