Four years ago the Foo Fighters lost a vital part of the band and lead singer and legendary Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl lost a friend for life when Taylor Hawkins suddenly died.
Grohl previously revealed how Hawkins’ sudden passing impacted him, telling Mojo in April “Losing Taylor was never meant to be” and “That threw our world upside down and made me question everything about life, that it was so unfair. I still have a hard time making sense of it.”
Four years later, though, Grohl is ready to share the story of how their friendship began nearly 30 years ago.
Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters Back on Top of the Charts
Grohl reminisced on the pivotal moment while appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on October 26th as part of a press tour for the Foo Fighters’ new single “Window” which is now at the top of the Mainstream Rock Airplay list on the Billboard Charts.
The Foo Fighters frontman pointed out that Hawkins did not start out his career with the Foo Fighters, and instead met them while he was drumming for Alanis Morrisette.
“Our first record came out around the time Alanis’ first record came out,” Grohl said. “So we were doing a bunch of those festivals and radio shows and things, but that was the first time I met Taylor, backstage.”
He recalled, “Here comes this blond, surfer dude, like, ‘Yo, dude, I love your band. You guys are so awesome. Yadda-yadda-yadda’. I knew, right then, I was like, ‘Oh, we’re gonna be best friends for the rest of our lives’.”
“Window” is also No. 3 on the Rock and Alternative Airplay list and No. 4 on the Hot Hard Rock list on the Billboard Charts.
