Roman Coppola Named Creative Consultant For 2027 Film Independent Spirit Awards

Even though it’s already one of the most beloved and irreverent awards ceremonies on the calendar, Film Independent is shaking up the Spirit Awards. Today it announced that Roman Coppola has been brought on as the ceremony’s first “artistic director.” In a press release, the non-profit emphasized Coppola was bringing “his distinctive artistic perspective to the ceremony,” and that his appointment “reflects Film Independent’s expanding creative ambitions under President Juan Devis and a renewed emphasis on the Spirits as a celebration of independent film culture.”

That release also says Coppola will work alongside Film Independent’s production team to help “shape the tone, visual identity and overall experience of the 2027 Spirit Awards, building on their tradition of irreverence and originality while introducing fresh energy and ideas.” Film Independent also added that Coppola’s hiring “marks an early step in Devis’ broader vision for Film Independent, strengthening its role as a champion of independent artists amid a changing arts and entertainment landscape.”

Even though the ceremony has been looking for a new telecast home since 2022, this is something of a puzzling announcement. The ceremony is known for a stellar selection of buzzworthy comedy emcees such as Ego Nwodim, Aidy Bryant, Hasan Minhaj, Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman, Melissa Villaseñor and Aubrey Plaza this decade. Its off-the-cuff and slightly insider-industry tone is what has differentiated the ceremony from its peers for decades. What Coppola would change to an afternoon most look forward to and with a limited budget remains to be seen.

Coppola has never even been nominated for a Spirit Award, but he’s an Academy Award and BAFTA Award nominee for Best Original Screenplay (“Moonrise Kingdom” alongside Wes Anderson), a BAFTA nomination for Visual Effects (for his father’s “Bram Stoker’s Dracula”), a Grammy nomination for Best Music Video (in 1997 for Green Day’s “Walking Contradiction”), and residence in the MoMA Permanent Collection for Phoenix‘s music video “Funky Squaredance.” His last feature credit was an executive producer credit and story by attribution for Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme.” He developed and directed multiple episodes of Prime Video’s “Mozart’s in the Jungle,” which ran from 2015-2018.

Unless his commercial credits are being kept quiet, he has worked sparingly this decade.

Coppola was quoted as saying, “The endless inventiveness of cinema and the unique, diverse ways filmmakers find to express themselves are things I care deeply about. I’m looking forward to collaborating with the team to create a celebration that’s playful, adventurous, and full of surprises—one that will spotlight the remarkable voices that make independent cinema so vital.”

Davis added, “The Spirit Awards have always celebrated artists who challenge conventions and find new ways to tell stories. We believe the Spirits themselves should embrace that same creative freedom. Roman brings a unique sensibility, a sense of play, and a willingness to experiment. We’re excited to work with him to rethink not just the ceremony, but the entire experience of bringing our independent film community together.”

The 2027 Spirit Awards will return for the second year in a row to the Hollywood Palladium on Saturday, March 6. The nominees for the 2027 Spirit Awards will be announced on Wednesday, December 2. The Nominee Brunch, an annual highlight honoring all nominees and featuring the presentation of the Emerging Filmmaker Awards, including the new Digital Creator Award, will take place on Saturday, January 9.
