Isao Takahata’s 1988 Film Named Among the Best Anti-War Movies Ever Is Streaming on Netflix

Isao Takahata’s Grave of the Fireflies is streaming on Netflix, bringing its look at war to viewers. The 1988 Studio Ghibli film follows two children trying to survive in Japan during World War II.

Now, SlashFilm includes it in its guide to the best war movies streaming on Netflix. The outlet calls it “one of the best anti-war movies of all time,” rather than giving it a numbered rank.

Meanwhile, Netflix launched the film across more than 190 countries in September 2024, initially excluding Japan. Its listing names Tsutomu Tatsumi and Ayano Shiraishi among the voice cast.

Grave of the Fireflies grew from a writer’s real loss

The animated story is based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s short story, which drew on his own wartime childhood. His sister died of hunger, and guilt followed him, Roger Ebert explained in his review.

However, Takahata did not turn those memories into a history lesson. Instead, he focused on hunger, fear and the small comforts children seek through teenage Seita and Setsuko.

Instead of filling the screen with battlefield action, the film keeps the focus on those who cannot fight back. As a result, needs carry the weight that weapons might hold in another war movie.

Isao Takahata resisted the label critics gave his film

Despite its reputation, Takahata rejected the idea that he had made an anti-war statement.

CBR quotes him saying, “[Grave of the Fireflies] is not at all an anti-war anime and contains absolutely no such message.”

Rather, his concerns included isolation and the danger of breaking away from society. That distinction separates his aim from the message many viewers take from the suffering onscreen.

Still, Ebert saw animation as central to its emotional force, not a barrier to drama.

He wrote, “Yes, it’s a cartoon, and the kids have eyes like saucers, but it belongs on any list of the greatest war films ever made.”
