American Airlines Just Returned to This Caribbean Nation After a Six-Year Hiatus

Airlines in the United States offer several international flights out of major hub airports around the country, and another destination is back for prospective travelers after more than half a decade.

On Monday, American Airlines announced that it will be operating daily nonstop service to a destination that it has not provided flights to in six years.

The reinstatement of the destination also marks a major milestone for the airline when it comes to international flights.

Flights Reinstated After Six-Year Absence

American Airlines is now the first major United States carrier to re-offer nonstop flights to Haiti, and passengers can visit the country on a flight from Miami International Airport aboard a Boeing 737 aircraft.

The reinstated route to Haiti takes travelers from MIA to Cap-Haitien, Haiti (CAP), and is American’s 100th destination in Latin America and the Caribbean.

American operated the inaugural flight after the relaunch with an all-Haitian, Creole-speaking crew.

American’s Vice President of International Operations José A. Freig said that “the continued growth of our network in the region — including being the first airline to return to Venezuela earlier this year — is a reflection of the legacy we’ve built and one we’re proud to carry forward.”

Reinstating service to Haiti is part of a larger expansion effort for American out of its hub at Miami International Airport. The airline runs more than 410 peak daily flights to over 170 destinations across 46 countries.

Juan Carlos Liscano, American’s Senior Vice President of MIA Operations, said that the airline will have its “largest-ever” schedule out of Miami this winter, and that resuming the Haiti service reaffirms its commitment to South Florida.

American’s overall winter expansion at Miami International Airport will also include flights to the following destinations:

  • San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU)
  • St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands (STT)
  • Antigua (ANU);
  • Tortola, British Virgin Islands (EIS)
  • Exuma, Bahamas (GGT)
  • St. Kitts (SKB)
  • Rio de Janeiro (GIG)

American Airlines Expands Footprint in Miami

American will also work to expand Concourse D at Miami International Airport, increasing flight capacity and bolstering its international footprint.

American is also bringing a new Flagship lounge to Miami, doubling its lounge space with the existing Admirals Club at the airport.

Liscano notes that Miami is American’s “international gateway,” serving over 30 million customers on an annual basis.

“The lounge experience plays a key role in enhancing that travel journey, offering a quiet and comfortable respite from the busy terminal,” he added.

“Which is why we are so eager to give our Miami customers — including those connecting through our hub — new and improved spaces to relax, work and play.”

As the winter travel season ramps up, it’s clear that American Airlines is looking to bring as many travelers as possible through Miami International Airport – including to destinations they may not have been able to access recently.
