- The refresh comes as Qin family sales face pressure, with cumulative sales down 54.71% year-on-year in the first 9 months.
BYD (HKEX: 1211) has launched the third-generation Qin Plus DM-i in China, updating its key plug-in hybrid family sedan with a larger body, longer electric range and optional LiDAR.
The model went on sale on Tuesday in 3 variants, with limited-time prices ranging from 76,900 yuan ($11,450) to 97,900 yuan. Official guide prices range from 79,900 yuan to 100,900 yuan.
The new generation retains BYD’s fifth-generation DM hybrid technology, offering a maximum CLTC electric range of 220 km (137 miles) and the God’s Eye B driver assistance system as an option. Its predecessor had a maximum all-electric range of 210 kilometers.
The entry-level 140-km Leading variant has a guide price of 79,900 yuan and a limited-time price of 76,900 yuan. The 220-km Beyond variant in the middle is priced at 90,900 yuan and 87,900 yuan, respectively.
The top-spec 220-km Excellence variant has a guide price of 100,900 yuan and a limited-time price of 97,900 yuan. All 3 variants are available at 3,000 yuan below their guide prices for a limited time.
The car measures 4,840 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width and 1,498 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm. Those dimensions are up 60 mm, 63 mm, 17 mm and 82 mm, respectively, from the previous generation.
The exterior features a redesigned front end and a fastback profile, while retaining the Qin family’s full-width taillights inspired by Chinese knots. A new Island Blue paint option further refreshes the entry-level family sedan’s appearance.
The powertrain pairs a 1.5-liter engine with an electric motor, delivering maximum outputs of 74 kW and 120 kW (161 hp), respectively.
The model offers 16.2-kWh and 24.3-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery packs, providing CLTC electric ranges of 140 km and 220 km, respectively. Charging from 30% to 80% takes as little as 20 minutes.
BYD says the car offers a combined range of up to 2,290 km with a full tank and fully charged battery, with fuel consumption as low as 2.58 liters per 100 km under the NEDC cycle when the battery is depleted.
The optional LiDAR-equipped God’s Eye B system supports city navigation on autopilot (CNOA), highway and expressway navigation assistance (HNOA), and multiple intelligent parking functions.
The cabin introduces the DiLink 150 system, featuring an 8.8-inch instrument display and a 10.1-inch or 12.8-inch central touchscreen. Additional storage and redesigned seats aim to improve everyday usability.
The Qin Plus is the entry-level product line in BYD’s Qin family, offering both battery electric and plug-in hybrid versions. This launch covers the DM-i plug-in hybrid, while the third-generation battery electric version previously appeared in regulatory filings.
The Qin family also includes the Qin L and the higher-positioned Qin Max, which launched in August. BYD is continuing to refresh this core family sedan lineup as it faces declining sales.
Qin family sales totaled 23,472 vehicles in September, down 65.27% year-on-year but up 7.54% from August, according to data compiled by CnEVPost.
In the first 9 months of the year, cumulative Qin family sales reached 207,589 vehicles, down 54.71% year-on-year.
