Leapmotor International wins Europrivacy certification

A Chinese-linked carmaker leading on EU privacy credentials is notable as scrutiny of connected vehicle data from China intensifies

Leapmotor International, the Stellantis-Leapmotor joint venture that sells the latter’s Chinese-developed EVs overseas, is one of the first automakers to win Europrivacy certification, the official European Data Protection Seal under GDPR. It is a pointed credential for a Chinese-linked brand at a time of growing scrutiny over connected car data from China.

DNV issued the certification, which covers three areas: marketing and profiling, vehicle maintenance services and connected services. Auditors reviewed governance, contracts, data flows, technical and organisational safeguards, cybersecurity and supporting IT systems. They also checked alignment with automotive, connected vehicle and cybersecurity standards.

Europrivacy is recognised under Article 42 of GDPR as independent validation that data processing within the certified scope meets EU requirements.

The certification applies to the joint venture, which Stellantis controls with a 51% stake, and to its European processes rather than Leapmotor’s operations in China. That structure is the point, since it lets Leapmotor sell connected cars in Europe through a European-governed entity. With the US barring Chinese connected vehicle software and Brussels debating its own response, independent proof of EU data compliance could become a real advantage for Chinese brands with European partners.

Why this matters:

  • Trust signal pre-empts scrutiny. Certification gives Leapmotor independent evidence of GDPR compliance as Europe weighs curbs on Chinese connected-vehicle data, and could set expectations for other Chinese entrants.
  • Scope leaves the key question open. The seal covers the Dutch joint venture’s sales, after-sales and connected service processes, and does not by itself address the concern most often raised about Chinese brands: whether vehicle data could be accessed under Chinese national security law.
  • Stellantis control enables the move. As a Stellantis-controlled entity, Leapmotor International can offer European governance that wholly Chinese-owned rivals cannot, which may prove a competitive asset if EU data rules tighten.
