LEGO Launches the Mother of All Mash-Ups, Ideas Challenge Needs Star Wars Mixed with Marvel

I’ve heard people mistaking the Star Wars universe for that of Star Trek, and I even know some who can’t tell the difference between a Marvel superhero and a DC one. Until this week, though, I’ve never heard of anyone mixing up the worlds of interstellar travel and adventure with that of suited people with powers.

Well, guess what? Danish toy maker LEGO announced what may very well be one of the wackiest Ideas challenges in ages: a mash-up between the worlds and characters of Star Wars and Marvel, which will forever be immortalized in plastic brick form.

The new LEGO Ideas challenge was officially announced this past weekend during the New York Comic Con, and, to be fair, did not pop into the heads of LEGO’s peeps out of the blue. As you know, there’s a new comic series coming out at the beginning of next year.

It’s called Star Wars/Marvel: Hope Assembles, and it is the first-ever crossover between the two universes. At the same time, it’s also one of the ways the Star Wars franchise chose to celebrate its 50th anniversary next year.

So, what is this new LEGO Ideas challenge all about? Well, for one, there are three themes fan designers can choose from: vehicles, characters, and scenes. Once a theme is selected, the build can officially begin, and, when that’s over as well, the designs can be submitted to LEGO Ideas for review.

From there, the process is as straightforward as possible. People can vote on a submitted idea until certain thresholds are reached. LEGO doesn’t specifically say what that would be in this case, but, in general, a set must be voted for by at least 10,000 people to be considered for production.

There are, of course, some rules for the build process itself. The first is that any set created as part of the challenge must contain characters that are part of the Star Wars: A New Hope movie and any Marvel comics.

Then, the resulting set must be an original creation and combine elements that are part of each of the two worlds. That means sets that depict only one of the two will not be allowed in. Finally, the sets imagined for this challenge must contain a minimum of 400 pieces of plastic and a maximum of 3,000.

LEGO says voting for the Ideas submitted as part of this challenge will open on December 15, 2026, while the sets selected for the grand prize will be announced on an unspecified date next year.

Naturally, we’ll keep an eye on this and report back when strange designs like a Tony Stark-made Stormtrooper, Doctor Strange fighting alongside the Rebel Alliance, or perhaps Darth Vader chasing the Infinity Stones come to light.
