Mobileye secures first TÜV SÜD certificate for ADAS work

Mobileye says independent validation, not just accumulated test mileage, is becoming the benchmark for proving ADAS safety

Mobileye has won its first inspection certificate from TÜV SÜD for driver assistance development, after an audit confirmed that its automatic emergency braking (AEB) development process conforms with ISO 21448. The standard, known as Safety of the Intended Functionality (SOTIF), covers risks that arise even when a system is working as designed.

The audit examined how Mobileye identifies, evaluates and mitigates those risks, including the limits of sensors and perception systems and difficult real-world conditions. SOTIF complements functional safety, which deals with hardware and software faults, by addressing performance limitations and reasonably foreseeable misuse.

“Independent validation helps build trust by providing an objective review of repeatable processes, systematic risk assessment and clear engineering accountability for safety,” said Almog Shany, Safety Officer at Mobileye.

The certificate covers AEB only, but Mobileye says the same safety processes underpin its wider ADAS and autonomous driving work. It previously received a TÜV SÜD recommendation for the safety management system behind its Level 4 Mobileye Drive system.

AEB is becoming a regulatory requirement: it is already mandatory on new cars in the EU, and US rules will require it on new light vehicles by September 2029. As cheaper Chinese ADAS chips such as Axera’s win business abroad, third-party certification gives Mobileye a way to compete on more than price.
