I’m of two minds when it comes to the Dark Horse SC. On the one hand, it’s a proper performance car. Vastly superior to the “base” Dark Horse. On the other hand, it doesn’t have the GTD’s full chassis sophistication and engineering. In other words, the Dark Horse SC is merely an upgraded version of the conventional Mustang, whereas the GTD is a completely different beast.

We’re talking a rear-mounted gearbox and a racing-derived pushrod system at the rear for the latter. It’s pretty much a race car for the road, and therein lies the difference. I wouldn’t use this as an explanation for why this car didn’t sell, though. Its original sticker price was $118,085, and the bidding stopped at $114,000 – roughly 3.5% below sticker. Not enough to hit the reserve and generate a sale.

With 26 miles on the clock, this is still brand-new, so I wouldn’t call what just happened here depreciation. It’s a clear case of unmet expectations. Whether those expectations were realistic or not, that remains to be seen. Also, this isn’t a limited-production car, as Ford hasn’t announced a production cap. Nor have they disclosed how many examples are to be made.

I’m just as curious as you guys are with regards to the valuation. I think we need more data before we can officially call it one way or another. But the fact that someone tried to land it for below MSRP does make me think that there will be some depreciation on these cars, and possibly sooner rather than later.

Now, in terms of specs, there a lot to admire here, from the SC fender badging to the revised front fascia, model-specific vented hood, functional hood pins, underbody and rear diffuser, quad-exhaust outlets, Gurney flap rear spoiler… plus you get the exposed carbon fiber front grille, rear diffuser and mirror caps – courtesy of the $10k Carbon Fiber Exterior Package.

Meanwhile, the 20″ Tarnished Dark Anodized alloy wheels are rocking Pirelli P Zero rubber, with stopping power provided by Notorious Blue six-piston front and four-piston rear Brembo calipers.

Moving along to the interior, that’s where you’ll find the Black Onyx ActiveX upholstery, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, Ford Racing sill plates, sat-nav, cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and more. As you can see, everything is wrapped in plastic. This car has likely never been driven (only moved).

The cherry on top is the supercharged 5.2-liter Predator cross-plane crank V8, same one as in the Mustang GTD. It sends 795 horsepower and 660 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheels via a Tremec dual-clutch automatic transmission. On paper, you should be able to hit 60 mph (97 kph) in about 2.9 – 3.0 seconds, making the Dark Horse SC about 0.5 seconds quicker to 60 than the 760-horsepower Shelby GT500.
