Buying Third Dimension AI shows Rivian treating simulation as a core autonomy capability it must own as its robotaxi plans develop
Rivian has acquired Third Dimension AI, a developer of AI-generated 3D environments, to speed up synthetic data creation and simulation for its self-driving and driver assistance systems. Set up by Piotr Sokolski and Tolga Kart, the start-up turns real-world driving data into detailed, adjustable 3D scenes in which complex situations can be rebuilt and varied at scale.
Bringing the platform in-house lets Rivian’s autonomy models practise against rare, hazardous events without waiting for them to recur on public roads. The acquired team moves into Rivian’s autonomy engineering and research teams, and financial terms were not disclosed.

Owning the simulation layer gives Rivian direct control over a core part of autonomy development. It also feeds both of its stated autonomy tracks, systems for its own consumer vehicles and a robotaxi programme.
“Simulation is central to how we train and validate our autonomous driving systems,” James Philbin, Senior Vice President of Autonomy and AI at Rivian, said. “Third Dimension’s team has built impressive technology that turns real-world data into detailed 3D environments. This allows us to recreate challenging driving situations, vary the conditions, and improve how our systems respond. Their technology and expertise will strengthen and accelerate autonomy across our consumer and robotaxi roadmaps.”
