The 2027 TAG XL Lite Teardrop Debuts as a Nice Update from Tent Camping

Not all good things happen with a bang and a lot of fanfare, believe it or not. nuCamp RV, one of the most appreciated U.S. manufacturers of light and compact towables, is choosing a stealth debut for what is bound to become a popular model as soon as the word spreads.

That would be the TAG XL Lite (also spelled as T@G), which debuts as a 2027 model and is, as its name says, the Lite version of the already popular TAG XL, itself a variation of the TAG model that debuted way back in 2013.

Designed to be an upgrade from traditional tent camping, the TAG XL Lite bets big on quality work, basic comfort, and the same unmistakable nuCamp aesthetics nuCamp customers and fans have come to love. At the base of this new floorplan is the old – and very popular – TAG SE.

The TAG and sister TAB series of teardrop travel trailers from nuCamp are widely regarded as the best you’re going to find right now. Never too big or heavy as to become a real hassle to maneuver and own, yet spacious enough to fit a variable range of creature comforts, they promise lifetime use and enjoyment thanks to their zero-wood construction and Amish-built quality cabinetry.

They’re not fussy or overly complicated, and that’s by design. The same goes for the latest addition to the family, the TAG XL Lite.

This one is a rolling contradiction, if you think about it. It’s an XL version of the standard TAG model, yet now it’s Lite(r), so it’s big and pared down at the same time. That, too, is intentional because nuCamp imagines it as an update from traditional tent camping, but with the extra body width of the TAG XL, so it’s a step-up from a traditional teardrop trailer as well.

Construction is the same as with all the other TAGs, so you have a composite, wood-free structure on a Lippert-built frame, with an aluminum framework and an exterior layer of fiberglass. The trailer rides on a single axle with Dexter spring suspension, electric brakes, alloy wheels, and aggressive offroad tires, and you also get custom fenders like on its better equipped brother, the TAG XL.

The layout is similar to the one on its predecessor, but pared down to earn the “Lite” moniker. This is a bigger teardrop with a tailgate that could be turned into a galley if you need one and have the extra cash, or you could spec it with the gear you already own, or use it as it is. That’s what Lite is all about, the freedom to use it however you see fit.

Coming in at 13 feet 7 inches (4.1 meters) in overall length, the TAG XL Lite is 7 feet 11 inches (2.4 meters) wide and offers 49 inches (124.5 cm) of headroom inside. You obviously won’t be able to stand up inside, but you can sit up without bumping your head and that’s always a plus – especially with this one, which comes with a foldable mattress so you can have a dry, safe space you can retire to in case the weather turns.

Equipped as standard with two entry doors, the TAG XL Lite features storage at the head of the bed, while the foot of the bed allows for a pass-through connection to the rear storage space or tailgate galley. When nuCamp says they’re building this teardrop to be basic, simple, and unfussy, that’s exactly what they deliver.

The TAG XL Lite comes with no exterior graphics and fewer windows than any other TAG, no holding tanks, no furnace, and no appliances in the tailgate, which nuCamp describes as “a highly versatile storage space.”

It does, however, come equipped with a 6,000-BTU AC unit mounted in the partition between the foot of the bed and tailgate, a three-speed fan you can upgrade to a MaxxAir fan for better ventilation inside, and two opening windows that have a slight tint and integrated privacy blinds and flyscreens.

Also standard is premium soft-close cabinetry hand-built in the Amish community in Ohio, LED lights, an exterior solar port you can use for a briefcase-style solar panel, and power outlets and USB charging points. There isn’t much of any of these to go around, because the trailer itself is very compact – again, by design.

Options include three colors to choose from for the roof and sidewalls and add-ons like a 26-liter (0.9 cu-ft) 12V Bluetooth cooler that would sit in the tailgate, the tri-fold multifunctional mattress that’s both bed and lounge, an unmounted steel spare tire, a rear receiver with a 150-lb (68-kg) capacity, and the aforementioned MaxxAir fan.

The 2026 TAG XL Lite has a gross weight rating of 2,200 lbs (998 kg), with an empty weight of just 990 lbs (449 kg) and a tongue weight of just 76 lbs (34.5 kg).

MSRP is at a hair under $20,000, but sale prices will vary according to options (if any) and dealer location. While nuCamp hasn’t made much fuss about the new floorplan, failing to even feature a video tour on their socials, they do have a short walkthrough on the official page.
