HBO’s Lanterns just set a record no DCU project wants to hold. The show’s audience score plummeted after its Season 1 finale, with fans taking a swipe at its biggest twists and creative decisions.
Lanterns now has the lowest DCU audience score on Rotten Tomatoes
HBO’s Lanterns now holds the lowest audience score among all DCU projects on Rotten Tomatoes. The show’s Popcornmeter score has dropped to 70% since the Season 1 finale aired. It initially launched with a much higher rating before fan backlash dragged it down.
The score places Lanterns below every other DCU release. Creature Commandos sits at 79%, while Superman earned a “Verified Hot” 90%. Even Peacemaker Season 2 and Supergirl hold higher marks at 79% and 72%, respectively.
Much of the backlash centers on the finale’s killer reveal. The Season 1 finale revealed that Sheriff Kerry Kane murdered Hal Jordan. Fans questioned why a non-superpowered character killed the legendary Green Lantern. One fan listed iconic villains such as Sinestro, Atrocitus, and Black Hand before expressing frustration. Another viewer called it “the stupidest decision, build up and pay off ever.”
The finale also drew criticism for its lack of action and poor visual effects. Viewers mocked the wirework during John Stewart’s first flight sequence. One fan called it “one of the worst flying scenes I’ve ever seen.” Several fans made unfavorable comparisons to older CW superhero shows. One viewer asked why a CW Supergirl flight from 2015 looked better.
John Stewart never wearing his Green Lantern suit also frustrated viewers. Showrunner Chris Mundy told The Ringer-Verse podcast the team scrapped the costume. “Where our story ended, that just felt like the most poetic,” Mundy said. However, fans widely rejected the reasoning. One fan wrote that the finale should have ended “with John Stewart’s ring lighting up, eyes glowing green, and the suit forming around him.”
HBO has not disclosed viewership data for the finale or announced a Season 2 renewal.
