Bioshock director confirms the movie is still in the works, but it’s a “tough nut to crack”

Believe it or not, but the Bioshock movie is still happening. I know, I’ll believe it when I see it. While chatting with The Direct, Bioshock director Francis Lawrence said they’re finally close to a breakthrough after so many years spent in development hell. I’ll say it again; I’ll believe it when I see it.

The Bioshock Movie is A Tough Nut to Crack

“You know, it’s tricky on a couple fronts,” Lawrence said. “We’re — I’m definitely active in it. We are still working on it. It is a tough nut to crack that world and that story, especially because it’s… I mean, you are the character when you play the game, and so creating that character from scratch into that world that, you know, quite honestly, is pretty bats**t in a most amazing way. It’s tricky. So we’re getting there, and we’re getting close, which is great.“

Lawrence also referenced the recent shake-ups at Netflix (Head of Film Dan Lin and Chief Content Officer Bele Bajaria were both axed), which could be another stumbling block.

“I would love nothing more than to be able to make that movie,” he said. “So still working on it. And then, you have also just the Netflix of it all because Netflix right now has had regime changes and just all of that kind of nonsense that I don’t like to have to deal with or have to. So we’ll see. Hopefully we’ll figure it out.“

Lawrence has been hard at work on The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, but will Bioshock be up next? “You never know,” Lawrence said, before adding that there are a lot of factors to consider, like where the scripts at, scheduling, and more. My guess is…nope.

The first Bioshock movie project was announced back in 2008 and was set to be directed by Gore Verbinski and written by John Logan. Verbinski dropped out several years afterwards, and the project was later shelved.

Red Rising

As for what actually might be next, it was recently announced that Lawrence had been tapped by Paramount Pictures to direct Red Rising based on the best-selling dystopian sci-fi series written by Pierce Brown.

Described as a blend of sci-fi and Roman mythology, Red Rising “is set on Mars in a future where society is set up in a color-coded class system, with the superior Golds on top. The story centers on Darrow, a young miner who is a Red, the lowest on the ladder and a people who exist to do hard labor. After seeing his love die and discovering the truth about his existence, Darrow infiltrates the Gold society with an aim to bring it down.“

As for the latest Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping is set to hit theaters on November 20, 2027.
